Fractional creative director jobs · hire a fractional creative director, or hire one for good

Fractional creative director jobs are senior creative-leadership roles held for part of the week: one person sets the creative direction, owns the standard of the work and leads the designers, writers and agencies who make it, for an agreed number of days. To hire a fractional creative director, decide what the work must change, then how many days it needs.

We recruit fractional, interim, part-time, temporary and permanent creative and marketing leaders. On every brief we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, after five-stage vetting. Looking for work? Fractional Quest is a fractional recruitment agency: send a Creative Director brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five vetted candidates.

01/ the role

Fractional creative director jobs: what the seat owns

A fractional creative director leads the work itself. The usual scope: the creative idea behind a campaign or a brand; the standard every piece has to meet; the briefs that go to designers, copywriters, film-makers and agencies; the review of what comes back; and the team or freelancers who make it. The difference from hiring an agency is ownership. A fractional creative director sits on your side of the table, is accountable for the work between visits, and can tell an agency when its idea is wrong.

The family of creative leadership roles

The same part-week seat is advertised under several titles. If the gap is brand strategy, positioning and governance rather than the work itself, hire a fractional brand director. If the board needs one person to own marketing as a whole, brand and demand together, hire a fractional CMO; what a CMO does sets out that seat. For the wider marketing function, from head of marketing to marketing director, see fractional marketing jobs.

What fractional creative director jobs pay

No UK source we trust publishes a creative director salary or day rate, so we do not quote one; every candidate on a shortlist states their own. The neighbouring marketing seats are published. Robert Half’s 2026 salary guide puts a full-time marketing director at £70,000 (25th percentile) to £90,000 (75th), median £79,500, and a chief marketing officer at £110,250 to £183,750, median £147,000. A fractional fee is the day rate times the days worked.

02/ scope

How to hire a fractional creative director

1. Write down what the work must change

Start with the problem, not the title. A brand that looks different in every channel, a launch that needs one big idea, an agency roster nobody is directing, or an in-house team with no senior creative above it. Then decide the days a week you can fund and who the role reports to.

2. Decide between craft and strategy

Some creative directors come up through design, some through copy, some through film or brand strategy. Match the background to the work you need most. A launch campaign wants an ideas person who has led one; a design system wants someone who has built and policed one.

3. Judge the work and the thinking behind it

Ask for the brief behind each piece in the portfolio, what the candidate personally led, and what changed for the business afterwards. Ask how they review an agency’s work and how they say no. Take references from the marketing leaders and founders they worked for, not only the agencies.

4. Settle the engagement, including who owns the work

Agree the days, the outcomes for the first three months, what the creative director can sign off alone, and how urgent approvals are handled between their days. Put ownership of the work in writing (below). If they will work through their own company, check IR35 before the start date.

What we do on a creative brief

We send a shortlist of 3–5 candidates, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out. Every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

05/ brand and creative

Fractional brand and creative leadership: one seat or two

Fractional brand and creative leadership means putting a senior person over both what the brand stands for and how it looks and sounds, for part of the week. In a growing company the two often sit in one seat, because the budget will not stretch to two senior leaders and the decisions are closely linked. A creative director with strong strategy, or a brand director with strong craft, can hold both.

Split them when the work pulls in two directions: a rebrand or a portfolio of brands that needs strategy and governance, alongside a campaign calendar that needs a steady flow of ideas. Then the brand director sets the rules and the creative director makes the work inside them. If the gap is the rules, see fractional brand director.

Whoever holds the seat also holds two practical matters. Protection: registering a trade mark lets a business take legal action against anyone who uses its brand without permission, and a design registration protects the appearance of a product, such as its shape or pattern. Compliance: campaigns are advertising, and the CAP Code is the rule book for non-broadcast advertising, sales promotions and direct marketing.

06/ which seat

Creative director vs brand director vs CMO choose by the work

The three seats overlap, and small companies merge them. The creative director owns the work: the idea, the craft and the standard. The brand director owns the brand: positioning, architecture and the rules everyone works to. The CMO owns marketing as a whole: brand and demand, the budget, the team and the number the board holds marketing to.

Pick the seat by the problem. If the work is weak or inconsistent, it is a creative director. If nobody can say what the brand stands for, it is a brand director. If marketing has no senior owner at all, start with a CMO or a fractional marketing director, who may then bring in creative help underneath.

On pay, Robert Half publishes no creative or brand director figure, but its 2026 guide puts a full-time CMO median at £147,000 and a head of marketing median at £66,250. Each candidate on our shortlist states their own day rate.

07/ ownership

Who owns the creative work when the director is not an employee

Settle this before the first piece is made. The Intellectual Property Office’s guidance on ownership of copyright works says that when a person works under a contract for services, as a freelancer or contractor, they usually keep the copyright in what they produce unless there is a contractual agreement to the contrary. When you commission work, the creator is the first owner unless you agree otherwise in writing.

An employed creative director is different: work made in the course of employment usually belongs to the employer. So a fractional creative director on a part-time employment contract and one working through their own company can leave you in different positions. Put an assignment of the work, and of anything the agencies they direct produce, in the contract, and take legal advice on the wording.

08/ ir35

IR35 and fractional creative director roles employed part-time or through a company

A fractional creative director is either employed on a part-time contract or works through their own limited company. Where they work through their own company, the off-payroll working rules (IR35) may apply.

In most cases the client decides the worker’s status. For a small client outside the public sector, the worker’s own company decides; HMRC sets out the size tests in its guidance for clients. Status turns on how the engagement runs in practice, so set out control, substitution and the days in the contract and then run it that way. Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

09/ questions

Fractional creative director jobs FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in a fractional creative director.

Senior creative-leadership roles held for part of the week: a creative director who sets the creative direction, owns the standard of the work and leads the people and agencies who make it, for an agreed number of days, often alongside other clients. They are leadership seats, not freelance design or copywriting.

Write down what the work must change, then the days a week and who the role reports to. Decide whether you need craft or strategy most, judge the portfolio by the brief behind each piece and what it achieved, take references yourself, and put ownership of the work and IR35 in the contract before the start date. If the gap is brand strategy, hire a fractional brand director instead.

The day rate times the days worked. No UK source we trust publishes a creative director day rate, so we set out each candidate’s day rate on the shortlist. For comparison, Robert Half’s 2026 median for a full-time marketing director is £79,500, and £147,000 for a CMO (Robert Half).

A senior person, part of the week, over both what the brand stands for and how it looks and sounds. In a growing company one creative director or brand director often holds both. Split the seat when a rebrand or a portfolio of brands needs strategy while a campaign calendar needs a steady flow of ideas.

The creative director owns the work: the idea, the craft and the standard. The brand director owns positioning, architecture and brand governance. The CMO owns marketing as a whole, brand and demand, with the budget and the team. At a small company they overlap; pick the seat by the problem you need solved.

It depends on how they are engaged. Someone working under a contract for services usually keeps the copyright unless the contract says otherwise; an employee’s work made in the course of employment usually belongs to the employer (Intellectual Property Office). Put an assignment in writing and take legal advice on the wording.

It depends on how the engagement runs in practice, not on its label. In most cases a medium or large client decides the status; for a small client outside the public sector, the worker’s own company decides (HMRC). We set out each candidate’s IR35 position on the shortlist and do not promise an outcome.

Fractional when you need senior creative judgement for part of the week. Interim when a launch or a rebrand needs full-time creative leadership for a fixed term. Permanent when directing the work is a full-time job. For board-level marketing, see fractional CMO jobs.
