Fractional creative director salary · pro-rata arithmetic, 2026

What a fractional creative director earns, pro-rata of the permanent salary

No independent UK source publishes a fractional creative director day rate.

The figures here are the permanent creative director salary from Ultimate Asset’s 2026 survey spread across working days — our arithmetic, a pro-rata floor for comparison, not a market rate.

On its £100,000 median, a fractional creative director salary comes to about £450 a day.

One day a week for 46 weeks is about £20,910 a year on the same basis (our arithmetic).

The rate you pay is the one a candidate quotes.

When you hire a fractional creative director through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Brand and creative leadership roles on the board

How fractional recruitment agencies compare is set out in one place, including how we work: a creative director brief and a shortlist of three to five.

01/ the role

How a fractional creative director is paid, and why this page shows arithmetic

A fractional creative director leads the creative work of a brand or team for part of the week, while working for other clients too.

They set the standard of the work, direct designers, writers and agencies, and answer for the output to the business.

They are paid by the day or on a monthly retainer, not a salary.

We looked for an independent published day rate for the seat and found none.

What is published is either a provider’s own price list or a figure for another seat or another country, and none of those is a market rate for this one.

So this page starts from what is published: the permanent salary.

Ultimate Asset’s 2026 survey of emerging-media businesses puts a creative director at £80,000–£130,000, with a median of £100,000.

Represent, another creative recruiter, puts the top of its design and digital design bands at £150,000.

Every day and year figure on this page is that salary divided out — our arithmetic.

The Chartered Society of Designers awards Chartered Designer status across design disciplines.

It is one signal of professional standing; ask about it, but do not price the engagement on it.

02/ scope

How to hire a fractional creative director

1. Name the discipline and count the days

Say whether the seat leads brand and design, digital, motion or advertising work, and how big the team is.

Then estimate the days a week it needs.

If the work includes advertising, it must meet the CAP Code, which the Advertising Standards Authority enforces on advertisers, agencies and media alike.

2. Ask for quotes on the same basis

Ask every candidate for the day rate, the days a week, the minimum term and the notice on each side.

Two quotes that differ on any of those are not comparable.

Set them against the pro-rata figures in the table below, which are a floor for comparison, not a price.

3. Put ownership of the work in the contract

This matters more for a fractional hire than a permanent one.

An employer is usually the first owner of work an employee makes in the course of employment, but a freelancer working under a contract for services usually keeps copyright unless the contract says otherwise (Intellectual Property Office).

Write the assignment into the agreement.

The look of a product can also be protected by registering a design.

What we do on a fractional brief

We recruit fractional, interim, part-time, temporary and permanent creative and marketing leaders, and non-executive directors.

We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

To start, hire a creative director for part of the week.

03/ the week

How a week divides.

Part of a week is the point of the model: the days you buy are yours, the rest of the week goes to other clients. Move the days a week and the week redraws.

Fractional creative director salary pro-rata of the permanent salary

Our arithmetic, not a market rate. Each permanent salary is divided by 220 working days for a day equivalent, then multiplied by 1, 2 and 3 days a week over 46 weeks. Every figure is worked from the full salary and rounded to the nearest £10. The salaries are as Ultimate Asset (emerging-media businesses only) and Represent, both recruiters, publish them for 2026.

07/ economics

What a buyer should check, beyond the day rate

Tax status turns on how the engagement runs, not on the title.

Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the contractor’s own company decides.

The rules apply contract by contract.

HMRC’s CEST tool gives its view on one engagement, and our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

A contractor who is registered for VAT adds it to every invoice.

Whether that is a real cost depends on whether your business can reclaim it, so ask before you compare quotes.

A day rate carries no benefits.

A contractor gets no holiday or sick pay from the client, and the client pays no employer pension contribution.

An employee is entitled to paid holiday and, under automatic enrolment, to an employer pension contribution.

That is why a pro-rata salary and a quoted day rate are not the same thing.

09/ the method

How we worked out the day and year figures

We start from a published permanent salary.

We divide it by 220 working days, the convention this site uses for a full-time year, to give a day equivalent.

We then multiply by the days a week a fractional engagement might buy, over 46 weeks.

A day a week for 46 weeks is 46 days.

Every result is worked from the full salary and rounded to the nearest £10.

On Ultimate Asset’s £100,000 median, that gives about £450 a day and about £20,910 a year for a day a week.

All of it is our arithmetic.

Ultimate Asset surveys emerging-media businesses only, such as creator-economy, social-first and digital media firms.

For an agency or an in-house brand team, read its figures as one view of the seat, not the whole market.

The arithmetic is a floor for comparison, not a market rate.

It leaves out everything an employer pays on top of a salary, and everything a contractor pays for themselves.

Use it to read a quote, not to set one.

Permanent, interim or fractional: which pay basis fits

A permanent hire is paid a salary and package; see creative director salary for the bands by discipline and seniority.

Full-time interim or freelance cover is paid by the day; see interim creative director salary.

A fractional engagement buys only the days the work needs.

11/ questions

Fractional creative director salary FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in a fractional creative director.

A fractional creative director is paid a day rate or retainer, not a salary. No independent UK source publishes that rate. On Ultimate Asset’s £100,000 permanent median, the pro-rata day equivalent is about £450, and a day a week for 46 weeks is about £20,910 a year (our arithmetic, not a market rate).
We divide the published permanent salary by 220 working days, then multiply by 1, 2 and 3 days a week over 46 weeks. Each figure is rounded to the nearest £10. It is our arithmetic, a pro-rata floor for comparison, not a market rate.
The day rate is whatever the candidate quotes. We found no independent published figure for it. For comparison, Ultimate Asset’s permanent range of £80,000–£130,000 divided by 220 working days gives £360–£590 a day (our arithmetic).
The day rate times the days. On the pro-rata arithmetic, a day a week for 46 weeks is about £20,910 a year at the £100,000 median, and two days about £41,820 (our arithmetic, not a market rate). We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, so you compare real quotes.
Unless the contract says otherwise, a freelancer working under a contract for services usually keeps the copyright (Intellectual Property Office). Put an assignment of the work in the agreement before it starts.
It depends on how the engagement runs. A medium or large client makes the status determination; a small private-sector client leaves it to the contractor’s own company (HMRC). It is decided contract by contract, not person by person.
Holiday and pension, no: the client pays neither for a contractor, though an employee is entitled to both under the rules on holiday and workplace pensions. VAT is added on top if the contractor’s company is registered for VAT.
They are paid on different bases. The permanent seat is paid a salary and package; see creative director salary. Full-time interim or freelance cover is paid by the day; see interim creative director salary.
