Creative director salary · base pay by discipline, 2026

What a creative director earns, by discipline, seniority and sector

A creative director salary in 2026 runs from £80,000 to £150,000 across three creative recruiters’ published bands.

Ultimate Asset’s 2026 survey of emerging-media businesses puts the median at £100,000.

Represent puts an advertising creative director at £100,000–£130,000, and a design or digital creative director at up to £150,000.

Discipline and seniority move the number more than the title does.

When you hire a creative director through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

01/ the role

What a creative director does, and what sets the pay

A creative director owns the creative output of a team, an agency or a brand: the ideas, the standard of the work and the people who make it.

They lead designers, art directors, writers and outside agencies, and they answer for the work to a client or to the business.

Discipline sets the pay first.

Represent’s 2026 survey puts a creative director at £90,000–£120,000 in art direction and in motion, £95,000–£150,000 in design, £100,000–£150,000 in digital design and £100,000–£130,000 in advertising.

Seniority comes next.

In advertising, Represent puts an associate creative director at £90,000–£100,000 and a group creative director at £130,000–£150,000.

An executive creative director starts at £150,000, and a chief creative officer at £200,000.

Sector matters too.

Ultimate Asset’s 2026 survey covers emerging-media businesses, such as creator-economy, social-first and digital media firms, and finds creative directors there at £80,000–£130,000, with a median of £100,000.

02/ scope

How to set the pay when you hire a creative director

1. Name the discipline and the scope

Say whether the seat leads brand and design, digital, motion or advertising work, and how big the team is.

The published bands differ by discipline, so a brief that says only “creative director” will draw quotes from the whole range.

In advertising, the work must also meet the CAP Code, which the Advertising Standards Authority enforces on advertisers, agencies and media alike.

In agency work, the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising runs the Effectiveness Awards, which judge creative work on proven results.

2. Choose the route

A permanent appointment suits a business that needs a creative lead every day.

If the seat is empty and needs cover now, an interim is paid by the day: see interim creative director salary.

If the work fits into part of the week, see fractional creative director jobs.

3. Settle who owns the work

Under UK copyright law, an employer is usually the first owner of work an employee makes in the course of employment.

A freelancer working under a contract for services usually keeps copyright unless the contract says otherwise (Intellectual Property Office).

Put it in the contract either way.

The look of a product can also be protected by registering a design, which helps prove the design is yours and when you created it.

4. Set base, bonus and equity together

None of the surveys here publishes a bonus figure for the seat, so agree one on the scope.

In a growth business, part of the package may be equity: HMRC’s Enterprise Management Incentives are the tax-advantaged share option scheme most smaller companies look at first.

What we do on a creative-leadership brief

We recruit permanent, fractional, interim, part-time and temporary creative and marketing leaders, and non-executive directors.

We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

03/ the route

Fractional, interim or permanent?

Four taps. The answer names the route for the seat and the page that covers it.

How much of the week does the work fill?
Is there a fixed end or a programme?
Does the seat sit on the board for years?
Is the need now, or can it wait for a search?

The route · Fractional

The work fills part of the week, so buy the days it needs.

A fractional creative director holds the seat on agreed days for as long as the seat is needed, and works for other clients on the rest.

05/ economics

What the salary costs the business, beyond the base

A salary is not the whole cost of an employee.

For 2026 to 2027, employer’s National Insurance is 15% on earnings above £5,000 a year (HMRC rates and thresholds).

Under automatic enrolment, the employer must pay at least 3% into a workplace pension on qualifying earnings, which in most schemes are earnings between £6,240 and £50,270 a year (GOV.UK).

Many schemes pay more.

On a £100,000 salary, employer’s National Insurance comes to £14,250 and the minimum pension to about £1,321, so the employer pays about £115,571 before any benefits (our arithmetic).

A bonus is pay too.

HMRC treats a cash bonus as earnings, with PAYE tax and Class 1 National Insurance deducted through payroll, so budget employer’s National Insurance on the bonus as well as the base.

07/ creative director salary uk

Creative director salary UK: the recruiter bands and the official figure

The recruiter bands and the official figure measure different things.

The creative director salary UK recruiters publish, £80,000 to £150,000 across Represent, Gabriele and Ultimate Asset, describes senior creative leads in agencies, studios and brands, drawn from the roles each firm recruits.

The ONS Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings gives an official view.

In ONS’s occupation coding index, the creative director title sits in group 2494, advertising accounts managers and creative directors.

That group’s full-time median was £48,977 in 2025, with the middle half earning £39,676–£65,132.

It includes account managers, so it sits well below the creative director bands.

Read any single figure as one view of the market.

The useful question is which band your seat sits in: its discipline, its seniority and the kind of business.

08/ creative director salary london

Creative director salary London and the rest of the country

No source we can cite publishes a creative director salary London band on its own.

Gabriele’s 2026 guide describes the salaries being paid “within London and the wider UK” creative, design and brand industry, and puts a graphic-design creative director at £100,000–£110,000 in its average band and £120,000 or more in its higher one.

Represent recruits from London but does not state a region for its bands.

Ultimate Asset’s survey covers emerging-media businesses across the UK.

For a role outside London, start from the lower end of each band and test it against the candidates you see.

09/ executive creative director salary

Executive creative director salary and the seats above

The executive creative director salary sits a level above.

Ultimate Asset puts it at £120,000–£200,000 in emerging media, with a median of £150,000.

Gabriele’s bands for a graphic-design executive creative director run from £110,000–£130,000 (low) to £140,000–£160,000 (average) and £180,000 or more (higher).

In advertising, Represent puts an executive creative director at £150,000 or more and a chief creative officer at £200,000 or more.

At that level, bonus and equity usually matter as much as base.
