How to hire
How to hire interim CPO product managers: the order of work
Write the transition first, then choose between an interim CPO and interim product managers, then search.
If the gap is leadership across the product team, hire an interim CPO. If the gap is capacity in one product area, an interim product manager is the cheaper and better fit; do not hire a CPO to run one backlog.
Interim product leaders are usually in another assignment or between them, so approach them directly. Ask each candidate for the same thing: a written view of your roadmap’s biggest risk after reading the evidence.
Where to hire interim CPO product managers matters less than how the brief is written: a clear transition, authority and end date is what makes good interims say yes.
The working pattern
What changes when the CPO is interim?
An interim CPO holds the product seat full-time for a defined period. Product managers keep running their areas; the interim owns the decisions that cut across them until a permanent leader arrives.
The illustrative brief: a product leader leaving mid-roadmap. The CPO has left during a pricing and packaging change. Four product managers are shipping, but no one can arbitrate between their roadmaps.
The appointment owns: The interim CPO sets one set of priorities for the quarter and owns the pricing decision with the CEO.
Another owner retains: Product managers keep their areas; the board keeps the permanent appointment.
The case is illustrative; it does not describe a Fractional Quest placement.

Assessment
How should you assess CPO candidates?
Put the same work and evidence in front of each candidate before comparing answers.
- PrioritisationAsk for a roadmap conflict between teams they resolved, and the evidence they used.
- DiscoveryAsk how they test a product bet before engineering builds it.
- ManagersTest how they would lead product managers without taking over their areas.
- HandoverAsk what decision record they left for a permanent product leader.
Acas recommends a consistent, fair selection process: choosing who to interview.
Vetting
What happens before anyone reaches your shortlist?
Five stages before a candidate reaches a shortlist of three to five.
- Pedigree screenTenureWe verify prior tenure in the seat, at the scale and stage you need. No consultant presenting as an executive.
- Mandate fitFitFit to your stage, sector and the problem the seat exists to solve, not a CV keyword.
- Reference deep-diveVerifyWe take references ourselves, from recent clients and boards: what they delivered, not what they titled it.
- ShortlistShortlistThree to five candidates, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.
- Kick-offStartScope, first-month outcomes and the contract agreed before day one.
The full process is on how we vet.
