Fractional sales director salary · day rate, retainer, year

What a fractional sales director earns, by the day, the month and the year

A fractional sales director is paid a day rate or monthly retainer, not a salary.

Exec Capital, a recruiter, says fractional sales director day rates typically range from £500 to £1,000, with most working four to twelve days a month.

Exec Capital describes the work at one, two or three days a week, with a minimum engagement of three to six months.

What a fractional sales director salary comes to over a year depends on the days sold across clients, not the rate alone.

When you hire a fractional sales director through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Fractional sales leadership roles on the board

Fractional recruitment works differently from a permanent search — shorter, scoped by days a week, and priced on the engagement. Send a Fractional Sales Director brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five vetted candidates.

01/ the role

How a fractional sales director is paid, and what sets the rate

A fractional sales director is a senior sales leader embedded in the leadership team for part of the week, owning the revenue target and building the team and process.

Exec Capital describes the work at one, two or three days a week, as an embedded leader rather than a project consultant.

The client pays for the days.

Exec Capital says some fractional sales directors work on a fixed monthly retainer for an agreed number of days, and others on a day rate with a minimum monthly floor.

There is no salary, commission plan or employer pension, although Exec Capital notes that equity is increasingly common at early-stage businesses.

HMRC’s Enterprise Management Incentives need the holder to work at least 25 hours a week, or 75% of their working time, for the company, so a sales director on one or two days a week will not usually qualify.

Seniority, sector and the complexity of the mandate set the rate within Exec Capital’s £500 to £1,000 range.

A first sales leader for a small team sits lower; a commercial restructure in a larger business sits higher.

Membership of the Institute of Sales Professionals, the professional body for selling, is one signal worth asking about.

A sales leader can also be employed part-time on a salary.

A part-time employee must not be treated less favourably than a comparable full-time one, with some benefits applied pro rata (GOV.UK).

02/ scope

How to hire a fractional sales director

1. Count the days the work needs

List what the sales leader must own: the forecast, the pipeline reviews, the team’s coaching, the first repeatable sales process, key accounts.

Then estimate the days a month it takes.

The days set the retainer; the work sets the seniority.

2. Plan for at least six months

Exec Capital recommends a minimum six-month initial engagement for a first fractional sales director, because the first month is mostly diagnosis and the results build from months two and three.

3. Agree scope, access and rhythm

Write down which days, which meetings and which numbers the sales director will have, and who they manage.

A retainer works when both sides know what it buys.

What we do on a fractional brief

We recruit fractional, interim, part-time, temporary and permanent sales leaders, and non-executive directors.

We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

03/ the week

How a week divides.

Part of a week is the point of the model: the days you buy are yours, the rest of the week goes to other clients. Move the days a week and the week redraws.

08/ economics

Rate is not income: what a fractional sales director keeps

The day rate is what the client pays, not what the sales director takes home.

Most fractional executives invoice through their own limited company and take money out as a salary through PAYE and as dividends from profit, after Corporation Tax.

Out of the same income they fund their pension, holidays, insurance and the days they do not sell.

Once that company’s taxable turnover passes the threshold, it must register for VAT and add VAT to the day rate.

Tax status changes the number too.

Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the sales director’s own company decides.

The rules apply contract by contract, so a fractional sales director with three clients can have three different answers.

HMRC’s CEST tool gives its view on one engagement; our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

10/ the year

How much a fractional sales director makes in a year

Multiply the rate by the days sold.

At Exec Capital’s £500–£1,000 a day, one client taking twelve days a month for a year bills £72,000–£144,000 (our arithmetic).

Two clients at four days a month each bill £48,000–£96,000 between them (our arithmetic).

In practice the diary rarely fills every month.

Holidays, the gaps between clients and the time spent finding the next one all come off the total.

A fractional sales director salary is the profit of a small business, not a rate multiplied by a full year.

To model your own position, start from the days you can realistically sell and use the rate calculator.

11/ the comparison

Full-time salary vs fractional pay: comparing like with like

A permanent sales leader is paid a salary, commission and package, with employer’s National Insurance and workplace pension contributions on top; IT Jobs Watch’s median advertised base is £100,000, and sales director salary has the benchmarks.

An interim is paid by the day for cover over a fixed period; see interim sales director salary.

A fractional sales director is paid only for the days bought.

Compare the total cost for the days the business needs, not the headline figures.

12/ questions

Fractional sales director salary FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in a fractional sales director.

Exec Capital says fractional sales director day rates in the UK typically range from £500 to £1,000, depending on seniority, sector experience and the complexity of the mandate. Most work four to twelve days a month.
A fractional sales director has no salary from the client: they are paid a day rate or monthly retainer. At Exec Capital’s £500–£1,000 a day, four days a month is £2,000–£4,000, or £24,000–£48,000 over a year (our arithmetic). Annual income depends on how many days they sell across clients.
There is no single figure. At £500–£1,000 a day, twelve days a month for a year bills £72,000–£144,000 (our arithmetic). From that come the costs of running their own company, their pension, unbilled days and tax, which depends on IR35 status engagement by engagement.
Exec Capital describes the work at one, two or three days a week, and puts most engagements at four to twelve days a month.
Exec Capital says some fractional sales directors work on a fixed monthly retainer for an agreed number of days, and others on a day rate with a minimum monthly floor. On its £500–£1,000 day rate, eight days a month comes to £4,000–£8,000 (our arithmetic).
Count the days the work needs, plan for at least six months, and agree scope, access and rhythm before the rate. See hire a fractional sales director.
The day rate times the days. Exec Capital puts the day rate at £500–£1,000, commonly four to twelve days a month: £2,000–£12,000 a month across that range (our arithmetic). We set out the day rate for every candidate on the shortlist.
It decides how the income is taxed. A medium or large client makes the status determination for each engagement; for a small private-sector client, the sales director’s own company decides (HMRC). Status depends on how each engagement runs in practice, so it is set per contract, not per person.
