Interim sales director salary · day rates, 2026

What an interim sales director earns, by the day and by the assignment

An interim sales director is paid a day rate, not a salary.

Exec Capital’s 2026 guide puts interim day rates at £600–£1,100 at mid-market scale and £1,100–£1,800 for complex transformation or turnaround mandates.

Its interim page splits the market by mandate, from £500–£900 a day at an SME to £1,200–£1,800 on an enterprise or complex commercial model.

The rate covers the days worked for a fixed period, with no salary, commission, pension or paid holiday behind it.

When you hire an interim sales director through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Interim sales leadership roles on the board

How fractional recruitment agencies compare is set out in one place, including how we work: a Interim Sales Director brief and a shortlist of three to five.

01/ the role

How an interim sales director is paid, and why the unit is the day

An interim sales director holds the sales seat for a defined period: a departure, a pipeline that has dried up, a push before a sale or investment, or a new market.

Exec Capital says an interim sales director holds the seat for a defined period, typically three to nine months.

The interim invoices the business for the days worked.

That makes the day rate the real unit of pay.

There is no salary, no commission plan, no employer pension and no paid holiday, and the interim carries the gaps between assignments.

Across all functions, the Institute of Interim Management’s 2026 survey puts the average assignment at 10.0 months, the average gap between assignments at 3.2 months and the average days billed in a year at 148.

An interim who works through their own company pays themselves through salary and dividends from what the company earns, after its costs and Corporation Tax.

The day rate is the company’s income, not the interim’s take-home pay.

02/ scope

How to hire an interim sales director

1. Define the mandate and its end

Say what the interim must deliver and by when: a forecast the board can trust, a rebuilt pipeline, a team through a quarter, a handover to a permanent hire.

The mandate sets the rate: Exec Capital’s bands run from £500–£900 a day at an SME to £1,200–£1,800 on an enterprise or complex commercial model.

2. Decide IR35 status at the start

If your business is medium or large, you make the status determination for the engagement and give the interim your reasons.

Settle it before you go to market, because it changes the rate candidates quote.

3. Match the record to the mandate

Ask for outcomes from comparable assignments: revenue on arrival and on exit, the team they ran, the pipeline they left.

A turnaround needs someone who has run one.

The Institute of Sales Professionals’ Sales Capability Framework sets out the knowledge, skills and behaviours to test a sales leader against.

Roles on the board are on interim sales director jobs.

What we do on an interim brief

We recruit interim, fractional, part-time, temporary and permanent sales leaders, and non-executive directors.

We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

If the seat needs a permanent owner after the interim, hire a sales director on that basis.

Four taps. The answer names the route for the seat and the page that covers it.

How much of the week does the work fill?
Is there a fixed end or a programme?
Does the seat sit on the board for years?
Is the need now, or can it wait for a search?

The route · Fractional

The work fills part of the week, so buy the days it needs.

A fractional sales director holds the seat on agreed days for as long as the seat is needed, and works for other clients on the rest.

Interim sales director salary day rates by mandate, and what they annualise to

Day rates as each publisher states them, all 2026. Exec Capital is a recruiter publishing its own reading of the market, not survey results; its salary guide and its interim page cut the market differently, so both are shown. The IIM figures cover every interim function, not sales alone. The two middle columns are our arithmetic, for comparison only: the rate × 148 days (the IIM’s average days billed in a year) and × 220 days (a full working year, which few interims bill). They are not salaries.

Interim pay and IR35: who decides, and what it changes

Tax status turns on how the engagement runs, not on the title or the contract alone.

Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the interim’s own company decides.

The rules apply contract by contract, so one interim can have engagements on both sides.

It shows in the rates.

The IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average interim day rate at £949 outside IR35 and £830 inside, across all functions.

HMRC’s CEST tool gives its view on a specific engagement.

Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

08/ interim sales director day rate

Interim sales director day rate by mandate

The interim sales director day rate rises with the size of the business and the risk of the mandate.

Exec Capital’s interim page puts an SME (up to £20m revenue) at £500–£900 a day, a mid-market or PE-backed business at £800–£1,400 and an enterprise or complex commercial model at £1,200–£1,800.

A turnaround or commercial acceleration mandate pays £900–£1,600.

Exec Capital’s sales director salary guide cuts the same market more simply: £600–£1,100 a day at mid-market scale and £1,100–£1,800 for complex transformation or turnaround work.

The two pages overlap rather than match, so ask which band a quote is drawn from.

09/ the year

Interim sales director salary, annualised

An interim sales director salary is a figure people search for, but no interim is paid one.

To compare, multiply the day rate by the days worked.

At Exec Capital’s mid-market band of £600–£1,100 a day, 220 days would bill £132,000–£242,000 and the IIM’s all-function average of 148 days billed £88,800–£162,800.

Both are our arithmetic, a comparison and not a salary.

A full month of interim cover, at about 22 working days on the same band, comes to £13,200–£24,200 (our arithmetic).

That is the client’s cost.

The interim pays their own pension, holidays, insurance and the gaps between assignments out of it.

For scale, IT Jobs Watch’s median advertised salary for a permanent sales director is £100,000 in base, before commission, pension and employer’s National Insurance.

See sales director salary for the permanent benchmarks in full.

10/ the other routes

Interim, permanent or fractional: which pay basis fits

Interim cover buys a sales leader for a fixed period, usually most of the week.

A permanent hire is paid a salary, commission and package, and the employer must enrol an eligible employee in a workplace pension; see sales director salary.

If the work fits into one, two or three days a week with no fixed term, a fractional sales director on a day rate or retainer may cost less over the same months; see fractional sales director salary.

Interim sales director salary FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in an interim sales director.

Exec Capital’s 2026 guide puts it at £600–£1,100 a day at mid-market scale and £1,100–£1,800 for complex transformation or turnaround mandates. Across all interim functions, the IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average at £907, and £1,004 in the private sector.
An interim sales director is paid a day rate rather than a salary. At £600–£1,100 a day, 220 days would bill £132,000–£242,000 and the IIM’s average of 148 days billed £88,800–£162,800 (our arithmetic). That is gross income to the interim’s company, before its costs, pension and tax.
It is a day rate. Exec Capital puts a turnaround or commercial acceleration mandate at £900–£1,600 a day on its interim page, and complex transformation or turnaround work at £1,100–£1,800 in its salary guide.
Define the mandate and its end date, decide IR35 status before you go to market, and check the candidate’s record on comparable assignments. See hire an interim sales director.
The day rate times the days. At Exec Capital’s mid-market band of £600–£1,100 a day, a month of about 22 working days is £13,200–£24,200 (our arithmetic). There is no employer’s National Insurance or pension on top when the interim works outside IR35 through their own company. We set out the day rate for every candidate on the shortlist.
Exec Capital says an interim sales director holds the seat for a defined period, typically three to nine months. Across all interim functions, the IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average assignment at 10.0 months.
It depends on how the engagement runs. A medium or large client makes the status determination; a small private-sector client leaves it to the interim’s own company (HMRC). The IIM’s 2026 survey puts average day rates at £949 outside IR35 and £830 inside, across all functions.
