Interim commercial director salary · day rates, 2026

What an interim commercial director earns, by the day and by the assignment

An interim commercial director salary is really a day rate.

Exec Capital puts the interim commercial director at £600–£1,100 a day, on UK market data as at the first quarter of 2026, depending on seniority, sector and the complexity of the assignment.

In FMCG, Advocate Group gives £650–£850 a day for an experienced commercial director on contract, and £800–£1,200 at a blue-chip business.

The rate covers full-time work for a fixed period, with no salary, pension or paid holiday behind it.

When you hire an interim commercial director through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Commercial and revenue roles on the board

Fractional Quest is a fractional recruitment agency: send a Interim Commercial Director brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five vetted candidates.

01/ the role

How an interim commercial director is paid, and why the unit is the day

An interim commercial director holds the commercial seat full-time for a defined period: a departure, a revenue turnaround, a pricing reset, a sale process or the gap before a permanent hire.

The Institute of Directors describes the seat as the one that plans, develops and puts in place the commercial strategies behind a company’s growth.

The interim does that job for the term of the assignment, and invoices for the days worked.

That makes the day rate the real unit of pay.

There is no salary, no employer pension and no paid holiday, and the interim carries the gaps between assignments.

Across all functions, the Institute of Interim Management’s 2026 survey puts the average assignment at 10.0 months, the average gap between assignments at 3.2 months and the average days billed in a year at 148.

An interim who works through their own company pays themselves through salary and dividends from what the company earns, after its costs and Corporation Tax.

The day rate is the company’s income, not the interim’s take-home pay.

02/ scope

How to hire an interim commercial director

1. Define the mandate and its end

Say what the interim must deliver and by when: a pipeline rebuilt, prices reset, a key account recovered, a handover to a permanent hire.

A mandate with an end point is easier to price and to judge.

A price reset must stay inside competition law: never agreed with a competitor.

Payment terms with business customers follow the late commercial payment rules.

2. Decide IR35 status at the start

If your business is medium or large, you make the status determination for the engagement and give the interim your reasons.

Settle it before you go to market, because it changes the rate candidates quote.

3. Match the record to the mandate

Ask for outcomes from comparable assignments: revenue and margin on arrival and on exit, the accounts won back, the pricing changes made.

A turnaround needs someone who has run one.

Roles on the board are listed on commercial director jobs.

What we do on an interim brief

We recruit interim, fractional, part-time, temporary and permanent commercial leaders, and non-executive directors.

We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

If the seat needs a permanent owner after the interim, hire a commercial director on that basis.

Interim pay and IR35: who decides, and what it changes

Tax status turns on how the engagement runs, not on the title or the contract alone.

Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the interim’s own company decides.

The rules apply contract by contract, so one interim can have engagements on both sides.

It shows in the rates.

The IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average interim day rate at £949 outside IR35 and £830 inside, across all functions.

In FMCG, Advocate Group gives £850 a day outside IR35 and £750 inside for a commercial director on contract.

HMRC’s CEST tool gives its view on a specific engagement.

Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

08/ interim commercial director day rate

Interim commercial director day rate by seniority and sector

Exec Capital’s interim commercial director day rate runs from £600 to £1,100, depending on seniority, sector and the complexity of the assignment.

It dates the figure to UK market data as at the first quarter of 2026.

Sector and seniority move the rate.

Advocate Group’s FMCG figures put a commercial director with 10–15 years’ experience at £650–£850 a day on contract, and one at a blue-chip business at £800–£1,200.

Its comparison table gives £950 a day for project-based interim work.

For the whole interim market, the IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average day rate at £907, and £1,004 in the private sector, across all functions.

The IIM figure is a market-wide average, not a commercial director rate, but it shows where the published ranges sit.

09/ interim commercial director salary

Interim commercial director salary, annualised

An interim commercial director salary is a figure people search for, but no interim is paid one.

To compare, multiply the day rate by the days worked.

On Exec Capital’s £600–£1,100 band, 220 days would bill £132,000–£242,000.

At the IIM’s all-function average of 148 days billed in a year, the same band bills £88,800–£162,800.

Both are our arithmetic, a comparison and not a salary.

A full month of interim cover, at about 22 working days, comes to £13,200–£24,200 on the same band (our arithmetic).

That is the client’s cost.

If the interim’s company is registered for VAT, VAT is added to the invoice.

The interim pays their own pension, holidays, insurance and the gaps between assignments out of it.

For scale, IT Jobs Watch records a £100,000 median advertised salary for a permanent commercial director in IT-sector job ads, before bonus, pension and employer’s National Insurance.

See commercial director salary for the permanent benchmarks in full.

10/ the other routes

Interim, permanent or fractional: which pay basis fits

Interim cover buys a full-time commercial lead for a fixed period.

A permanent hire is paid a salary and package; see commercial director salary.

If the work fits into part of the week, a fractional commercial director on a day rate or retainer may cost less over the same months.

For the permanent salary spread across part-week days (our arithmetic, not a market rate), see fractional commercial director salary.

For the executive seat above, see interim chief commercial officer salary.

Interim commercial director salary FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in an interim commercial director.

Exec Capital puts it at £600–£1,100 a day, on UK market data as at the first quarter of 2026. In FMCG, Advocate Group gives £650–£850 a day for an experienced commercial director on contract and £800–£1,200 at a blue-chip business. Across all interim functions, the IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average at £907.
An interim commercial director is paid a day rate rather than a salary. On Exec Capital’s £600–£1,100 band, 148 days, the IIM’s average days billed, would bill £88,800–£162,800 (our arithmetic). That is gross income to the interim’s company, before its costs, pension and tax.
Define the mandate and its end date, decide IR35 status before you go to market, and check the candidate’s record on comparable assignments. Roles on the board are on commercial director jobs.
The day rate times the days. On Exec Capital’s £600–£1,100 band, a month of about 22 working days is £13,200–£24,200 (our arithmetic). There is no employer’s National Insurance or pension on top when the interim works outside IR35 through their own company. We set out the day rate for every candidate on the shortlist.
Across all interim functions, the IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average assignment at 10.0 months and the average gap between assignments at 3.2 months.
It depends on how the engagement runs. A medium or large client makes the status determination; a small private-sector client leaves it to the interim’s own company (HMRC). The IIM’s 2026 survey puts average day rates at £949 outside IR35 and £830 inside, across all functions.
