Fractional head of sales salary · pro-rata, 2026

What a fractional head of sales earns, pro-rata of the permanent salary

No independent UK source publishes a fractional head of sales day rate.

The figures here are the permanent head of sales salary from IT Jobs Watch spread across working days — our arithmetic, a pro-rata floor for comparison, not a market rate.

On that basis, a fractional head of sales salary for one day a week comes to £15,640 a year at the £75,000 median of IT-sector job ads (our arithmetic).

When you hire a fractional head of sales through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Head of sales roles on the board

Fractional recruitment works differently from a permanent search — shorter, scoped by days a week, and priced on the engagement. Send a Fractional Head of Sales brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five vetted candidates.

01/ the role

How we work out the figure, and what it is not

A fractional head of sales runs the selling for part of the week: the pipeline, the forecast, the team and the number.

They are paid by the day or on a monthly retainer for set days, not a salary.

No independent source we can verify publishes a day rate for the seat.

So we start from the permanent salary.

IT Jobs Watch puts the head of sales salary at a £75,000 median in IT-sector permanent job ads over the six months to 4 October 2026, from 62 quoted salaries, with a range of £65,000–£100,000.

London ads had a £90,000 median.

We divide the salary by 220 working days to get a day equivalent, and round it to the nearest £10.

We multiply that by 46 working weeks and by the days a week.

The 220 days and 46 weeks are our assumptions, allowing for weekends, holidays and bank holidays.

The result is a floor for comparison.

It is what the permanent salary comes to for the same days.

It is not what a fractional head of sales charges, and it leaves out commission, pension and the costs a self-employed leader carries.

The quotes you receive are the real figures.

02/ scope

How to hire a fractional head of sales

1. Count the days the number needs

List what the seat must own: the pipeline review, the forecast, hiring and coaching the team, the biggest deals.

Estimate the days a month it takes.

The days set the cost; the scope sets the seniority.

2. Set out what good looks like

The Institute of Sales Professionals’ Sales Capability Framework sets out the knowledge, skills and behaviours sales work draws on.

Use it to say which of them the seat needs, and ask candidates for evidence against each.

3. Compare quotes on the same days

Ask every candidate for a day rate, the days a week they can commit and their notice.

Set each quote against the pro-rata floor in the table below for the same days.

What we do on a fractional brief

We recruit fractional, interim, part-time, temporary and permanent sales leaders, and non-executive directors.

We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

03/ the week

How a week divides.

Part of a week is the point of the model: the days you buy are yours, the rest of the week goes to other clients. Move the days a week and the week redraws.

07/ economics

What to check in the quotes before you agree a day rate

Read every quote on three terms: the day rate, the days a week, and the notice on both sides.

A lower rate on more days can cost more than a higher rate on fewer.

Tax status turns on how the engagement runs, not on the title or the contract alone.

Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the fractional leader’s own company decides.

The rules apply contract by contract.

HMRC’s CEST tool gives its view on one engagement; our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

If the person’s company is registered for VAT, VAT is added to the invoice.

A day rate carries no employer pension: an employer pays into a workplace pension for an employee, not for a supplier.

Nor does it carry paid holiday: the client pays for the days worked.

Fractional head of sales day rate: why we print a floor, not a rate

We looked for a fractional head of sales day rate we could stand behind.

The figures online are providers’ own price lists, or bands that trace back to pages like this one.

None is an independent count of what the seat is paid.

So the page shows one verified number, the permanent salary, and our arithmetic on it.

At the £75,000 median of IT-sector job ads, the day equivalent is £340.

At the £90,000 London median, it is £410 (our arithmetic, rounded to the nearest £10).

Use the floor to test a quote, not to set one.

For what the seat does part-time, see fractional head of sales; for the seat above, see fractional sales director salary.

10/ the other routes

Fractional, permanent or interim: three ways to fill the seat

A permanent hire is paid a salary, commission and package; see head of sales salary for the benchmarks.

An interim covers the seat full-time for a fixed period on a day rate; see interim head of sales salary.

A third route is a part-time employee on a pro-rata salary.

A part-time worker must not be treated less favourably than a comparable full-time one, with some benefits applied pro rata (GOV.UK).

11/ questions

Fractional head of sales salary FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in a fractional head of sales.

A fractional head of sales is paid a day rate or retainer, not a salary. No independent source publishes that rate. Pro-rata of the £75,000 median permanent salary in IT-sector job ads, one day a week comes to £15,640 a year and two days to £31,280 (our arithmetic, a floor for comparison).
We take IT Jobs Watch’s permanent head of sales salaries, divide by 220 working days and round to the nearest £10. We then multiply by 46 working weeks and by the days a week. The 220 days and 46 weeks are our assumptions.
No independent source we can verify publishes one. The day equivalent of the permanent salary is £300–£450 across IT Jobs Watch’s £65,000–£100,000 range, and £340 at the £75,000 median (our arithmetic). That is a floor for comparison, not a rate the seat is quoted.
The day rate you agree times the days. As a floor, the permanent median comes to £15,640 a year for one day a week and £46,920 for three (our arithmetic). Add VAT if the person is registered. We set out the day rate, availability and IR35 position for every candidate on the shortlist of 3–5.
No. IT Jobs Watch counts advertised base salary, before commission, so our arithmetic is base only. If a fractional head of sales is to share in what they sell, write it into the agreement. For employees, Acas advises setting commission out in the written statement.
It depends on how the engagement runs. A medium or large client makes the status determination; a small private-sector client leaves it to the fractional leader’s own company (HMRC). It is set contract by contract, not per person.
Count the days the number needs, set out the capabilities the seat must show, and compare every quote on the same days. See fractional head of sales jobs for roles on the board and how we run a brief.
