Fractional chief commercial officer salary · pro-rata, our arithmetic

What a fractional chief commercial officer earns, pro-rata of the permanent salary

No independent UK source publishes a fractional chief commercial officer day rate.

The figures here are the permanent chief commercial officer salary from Coburg Banks spread across working days — our arithmetic, a pro-rata floor for comparison, not a market rate.

Coburg Banks, a sales recruiter, puts permanent base pay at £110,000–£185,000, with a median of around £145,000.

Over 220 working days, that median is about £660 a day.

So a fractional chief commercial officer salary should be read from the quotes you receive.

When you hire a fractional chief commercial officer through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Fractional commercial roles on the board

Fractional recruiting starts with the brief, not the CV pile. Send a Fractional Chief Commercial Officer brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five candidates, each through five-stage vetting.

01/ the role

How a fractional chief commercial officer is paid, and why we show arithmetic

A fractional chief commercial officer leads the commercial function for part of the week: pricing, the commercial model, sales and the largest accounts.

They usually work one to three days a week for each client.

The client pays a day rate or a monthly retainer for agreed days.

There is no salary, bonus scheme or employer pension.

We looked for an independent published day rate for the seat and found none we could check.

The figures that exist come from firms selling fractional executives, or from data for other markets.

We do not print those as a rate.

What we can print is the permanent salary, from a named source, divided across the working year.

That tells you what the same base pay comes to per day.

It is our arithmetic, and it leaves out everything an employer pays on top of salary.

Treat it as a floor for comparing quotes, not as the going rate.

Below the CCO sits the commercial director, whose role the Institute of Directors describes as planning, developing and putting in place commercial strategies to support growth.

In a smaller business a fractional commercial lead may carry either title.

Scope the work, then compare the quotes.

02/ scope

How to hire a fractional chief commercial officer

1. Count the days the work needs

List what the CCO must own: pricing, the commercial plan, the sales team, key accounts, partnerships.

Estimate the days a month it takes.

The days set the cost; the remit sets the seniority.

2. Compare the quotes, line by line

Ask each candidate for a day rate, the days a week, and the notice either side can give.

Set each quote beside the pro-rata figures on this page.

A quote is an offer to do the work; the arithmetic is only a reference point.

3. Settle status, VAT and what is not included

Decide IR35 status before you go to market (see below).

If the person is registered for VAT, VAT is added to the invoice.

A day rate carries no holiday pay and no workplace pension contribution from you.

What we do on a fractional brief

We recruit fractional, interim, part-time, temporary and permanent commercial leaders, and non-executive directors.

We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

Roles on the board are on fractional CCO jobs.

03/ the week

How a week divides.

Part of a week is the point of the model: the days you buy are yours, the rest of the week goes to other clients. Move the days a week and the week redraws.

Fractional chief commercial officer salary the permanent salary, pro-rata

Our arithmetic, not a market rate. The permanent base is Coburg Banks’ 2026 figure, as /chief-commercial-officer-salary quotes it. Day equivalent = base ÷ 220 working days, rounded to the nearest £10. Each year column = that rounded day × 46 weeks × the days a week. 220 days and 46 weeks are our assumptions.

What the arithmetic leaves out, and who decides IR35

A permanent salary comes with paid holiday, employer’s National Insurance and an employer pension contribution.

A fractional executive who is self-employed gets none of those from the client and funds them from the fee.

That is why the pro-rata figure is a floor for comparison and not a rate.

Tax status turns on how the engagement runs, not on its label.

Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small private-sector client, the executive’s own company decides.

The rules apply contract by contract.

HMRC’s CEST tool gives its view on one engagement, and our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

09/ what to check

What to check in a fractional quote before you agree it

Ask for three things in writing: the day rate, the days a week or month, and the notice period.

Ask whether the rate changes if the days change.

Ask what happens to days not used in a month.

Check what the quote includes.

VAT is added if the person is VAT-registered.

There is no pension or benefits package inside a day rate.

If you would rather employ someone part-time on a salary, the Part-time Workers Regulations apply, and GOV.UK explains that some benefits are then given pro rata.

The CIPD’s introduction to reward separates fixed base pay from variable pay such as bonuses.

Our pro-rata figures cover base pay only.

A permanent CCO’s package usually carries a large variable part on top, so a fractional quote is not comparable to base alone.

Fractional, permanent or interim: which pay basis fits

A permanent chief commercial officer is paid a salary and package; see chief commercial officer salary for every benchmark.

An interim covers the seat full-time for a fixed period, paid by the day; see interim chief commercial officer salary.

11/ questions

Fractional chief commercial officer salary FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in a fractional chief commercial officer.

There is no published market figure. No independent UK source publishes a fractional chief commercial officer day rate. On Coburg Banks’ permanent median of around £145,000, the day equivalent is about £660 (÷ 220 days, our arithmetic). One day a week for 46 weeks comes to £30,360 a year (our arithmetic).
It is whatever the candidate quotes and you agree. For comparison only, Coburg Banks’ permanent base of £110,000–£185,000 spreads to about £500–£840 a day over 220 working days (our arithmetic, rounded to the nearest £10). That is base pay per day, not a fractional market rate.
We take the permanent base from Coburg Banks, divide it by 220 working days and round to the nearest £10. We then multiply that day by 46 weeks and by one, two or three days a week. Both 220 and 46 are our assumptions.
The day rate times the days. As a pro-rata reference, the permanent median comes to about £660 a day, or £30,360 a year for one day a week and £60,720 for two (our arithmetic). Add VAT if the person is registered. We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.
Not from the client, as a rule. A self-employed executive invoices for the days worked and funds their own pension and holidays. If you employ someone part-time instead, part-time workers’ rights apply.
It depends on how the engagement runs. A medium or large client makes the status determination; a small private-sector client leaves it to the executive’s own company (HMRC). HMRC’s CEST tool gives a view on one engagement.
Count the days the work needs, ask each candidate for a day rate, days and notice, and settle IR35 status before you go to market. Roles on the board are on fractional CCO jobs.
