Fractional Chief Operating Officer
The Franchise & Business Law Group
Salt Lake City, Utah | Primarily remote with monthly onsite participation
10 to 20 hours per week | Initial twelve month engagement
Help us build a firm that runs as thoughtfully as the businesses we advise.
Our clients are entrepreneurs, franchise systems, and business owners. They come to us for practical legal guidance as they build, protect, and grow their businesses. We are ready to bring that same deliberate approach to our next stage of growth.
The Franchise & Business Law Group seeks an experienced fractional COO to work directly with our two managing partners. Your assignment is to turn priorities into completed work, strengthen our operations, and give the partners more time to serve clients and develop the firm.
Your three main priorities
- Build our team. Lead recruiting and onboarding for at least one additional attorney, ideally two. Help ensure new hires receive the training, support, and productive work needed to succeed.
- Grow our estate planning practice. Build and coordinate the marketing, referral, and intake processes needed to attract clients and support a consistent client experience.
- Make AI useful. Evaluate and implement approved AI tools for legal and administrative workflows. Establish training, confidentiality protections, attorney review, and measures that show whether the tools improve the work.
What else you will own
You will improve accountability, financial visibility, and execution across the firm. That includes leading staff accountability meetings, clarifying responsibilities, improving billing and collections processes, developing useful KPI reporting, and strengthening intake and matter workflows.
Our current tools include Clio, Monday.com, Microsoft 365, and Outlook. You will help us use them consistently, identify gaps, and recommend practical improvements.
You will also coordinate approved marketing and business development initiatives, document recurring procedures, and turn partner decisions into plans with owners and deadlines. Given the available hours, prioritization and realistic sequencing will be essential.
How we work
Our founding principles are expertise, excellence, and dedication. We want those principles reflected in how we support our team and serve our clients.
For this role, that means listening before changing a process, communicating directly and respectfully, protecting confidential information, and following through on commitments. We welcome thoughtful disagreement and recommendations supported by evidence.
One question will guide our progress: “What came off the partners’ plates, and who owns it now?”
We want a clear answer identifying the work transferred, who is responsible, and how we know it is being handled.
What you bring
- Experience leading operations in a small law firm or comparable professional services business.
- Specific examples of improvements you personally implemented, with measurable results.
- Working knowledge of staffing, recruiting, professional services finances, client intake, and process improvement.
- The ability to secure team buy-in, coach experienced professionals, and address missed commitments respectfully.
- Comfort doing the implementation work yourself, including configuring systems, building reports, and managing recruiting pipelines.
- Sound judgment about confidentiality and the boundaries between operational leadership and legal decisions.
Law firm experience and familiarity with our software are valuable. Franchise industry experience is helpful but not required.
Engagement details
The anticipated commitment is 10 to 20 hours weekly, primarily remote, with monthly in-person visits and quarterly planning participation. Regular business hours availability is needed for meetings and coordination.
You will report jointly to both managing partners and lead implementation of approved plans. Other client engagements are permitted, subject to availability, confidentiality, and agreed conflict restrictions.
Compensation and engagement structure will be agreed upon based on experience, scope, and availability.
How to apply
Apply through LinkedIn with your résumé or professional profile. Include a note of 150 words or fewer explaining why our firm specifically interests you and describing one operational improvement you personally implemented, including the result.
Please also provide your weekly availability, ability to participate onsite, and proposed hourly rate or monthly fee.
