Fractional CAIO · Chief AI officer, part of the week
Fractional chief AI officer · what one does, what one costs, when you need one
A fractional chief AI officer is a CAIO who holds the AI seat for an agreed part of the week, on an ongoing basis, often for more than one company. They decide where the business uses AI and where it does not, set the rules for using it safely and lawfully, and answer to the CEO and board for both, without a full-time appointment.
This page explains the role: the week, the cost, and how a fractional CAIO compares with an interim or full-time one and with a head of AI. Fast Company 16 leaders on when fractional C-suite hires make sense · 24 Jun 2026
Senior leaders disagree on when a fractional C-suite hire makes sense: many back one for a defined mandate, others want a full-time owner for work that needs daily attention. An AI programme with a clear scope is often the first kind.

Live AI and technology leadership roles
How fractional recruitment agencies compare is set out in one place, including how we work: a CAIO brief and a shortlist of three to five.
01/ the role
What is a fractional chief AI officer?
A fractional chief AI officer is a CAIO engaged for part of the week, on an ongoing basis. “Fractional” describes the days, not the seniority: the person holds the AI seat in full and answers for it to the board, for an agreed number of days rather than five. The fractional CAIO meaning in one line: the whole AI brief, part of the week.
The title is new and not yet settled. In some companies the CAIO runs AI products and the engineers who build them; in others the role is mainly strategy, adoption and governance. A fractional CAIO is usually the second kind: they set the direction and the rules, and the building is done by the engineering team, a head of AI or a supplier. For the permanent seat, see chief AI officer.
CAIO, CTO or chief data officer?
A CTO builds and runs the technology the company sells. A chief data officer owns the data and who may use it, which is most of what an AI system needs; a fractional chief data officer is the part-week version. A CAIO owns the decisions about AI itself: which uses go ahead, which models and suppliers, how they are tested, and who is accountable when one goes wrong. Smaller companies often give one person two of these seats; if the gap is the product’s technology, a fractional CTO may be the better hire.
02/ scope
What a fractional CAIO does, week to week
The first month
An inventory of where AI is already used, officially and unofficially, which suppliers and models are involved, what data each use touches, and what the board wants AI to do for the business. The output is a short AI strategy and policy the leadership team can agree: the uses worth pursuing, the ones to stop, and the rules for everything in between.
Governance and risk
The UK has no single AI law. Government guidance sets out a principles-based framework that existing regulators interpret and apply within their remits, so a CAIO works out which regulators matter for the business. Where AI uses personal data, the ICO’s guidance on AI and data protection covers accountability, impact assessments, transparency and fairness. Companies that want a formal system often use ISO/IEC 42001, the standard for an AI management system.
A typical week
The leadership meeting, reviews of the AI projects in flight against what they were meant to deliver, decisions on new uses and suppliers, and work with legal, security and data on the risks. Days are agreed in the contract and change with the work.
Security and skills
The NCSC’s guidelines for secure AI system development make security a core requirement through design, development, deployment and operation, and a CAIO makes sure suppliers meet them. Companies that sell into the EU also meet Article 4 of the EU AI Act, which asks providers and deployers to support the AI literacy of the staff who use AI systems; training plans often land on the CAIO’s desk.

05/ what it costs
What a fractional CAIO costs and what moves the rate
A fractional CAIO is paid a day rate for the days worked, so the cost is the rate times the days. No source we can verify publishes a chief AI officer day rate or salary today, so we print none rather than guess. The rate moves with how central AI is to the product, how regulated the sector is, whether the person must also build, and how many days the work needs.
We set out each candidate’s day rate on the shortlist, with availability and IR35 position, so you compare real figures for your brief. Our rate calculator turns a day rate and days a week into a monthly figure.
06/ caio vs head of ai
Fractional CAIO vs head of AI deciding, or building
Fractional CAIO vs head of AI comes down to deciding versus building. A fractional CAIO sits with the leadership team, decides where AI is used and on what terms, and answers to the board. A head of AI is usually hands-on: they lead the people who build models and AI features, and report to a CTO or CAIO. Browse fractional head of AI jobs for that tier.
An interim CAIO is different again: full-time for a fixed term, usually to deliver one large programme or to hold the seat after a departure. Many companies start with a fractional CAIO who writes the strategy and the rules, then hire a head of AI to build against them.
07/ when
When to hire a fractional chief AI officer the usual triggers
Companies usually look at when to hire a fractional chief AI officer once AI decisions are being made across the business but nobody senior owns them. The common triggers:
AI is already in use, unmanaged. Staff use AI tools with customer or company data, and there is no policy.
A board or investor asks for an AI strategy. The question is what to do, in what order, and what it will cost.
A customer or regulator asks how AI is governed. An enterprise buyer’s questionnaire, an audit or an EU customer’s contract needs a senior answer.
A large AI purchase or build. A supplier contract or a product feature where a wrong choice is expensive.
The OECD AI Principles, the first intergovernmental standard on AI, are a common starting point for the policy. If the work fills the week, most companies move to a full-time CAIO; we recruit that permanent hire too.
08/ hiring
How to hire one the short version
Write down what the CAIO must deliver in the next twelve months, who they report to, what they can approve or stop, and how many days that takes. Ask candidates for an AI programme they led from decision to use, including one they stopped, and take references from the executives they reported to.
Settle the contract before the start. Where the CAIO works through their own company, the off-payroll working rules (IR35) may apply; status depends on how the engagement runs in practice, and a medium or large client makes the determination (HMRC’s guidance for clients sets out the size tests). Our IR35 guide explains the tests.
To hire fractional CAIO candidates through us, send the brief. We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate or pay, availability and IR35 position set out, after our five-stage vetting.
