Current fractional CAIO opportunities

Fractional recruitment works differently from a permanent search — shorter, scoped by days a week, and priced on the engagement. Send a CAIO brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five vetted candidates.

01/ the role

What is a fractional CAIO?

A fractional CAIO provides strategic AI leadership on a part-time basis. Companies hire a fractional Chief AI Officer for AI strategy, governance and responsible deployment — though Chief AI Officer is an emerging role without an established UK fractional day-rate benchmark, and we don't publish a fractional CAIO figure we can't source.

Fractional CAIOs often work with companies during critical AI adoption phases - initial AI strategy development, AI product development, regulatory compliance, or major AI infrastructure implementation. They establish AI frameworks, build AI-capable teams, and implement governance systems for responsible AI deployment.

02/ scope

Core fractional CAIO responsibilities

AI strategy and governance

Developing comprehensive AI strategies, establishing ethical AI frameworks, and creating governance structures for responsible AI deployment. Setting measurable AI objectives and building infrastructure to monitor AI performance and compliance.

AI implementation and architecture

Designing AI system architectures, selecting appropriate AI technologies and vendors, and overseeing AI model development and deployment. Ensuring AI systems integrate effectively with existing business processes and technology infrastructure.

Regulatory compliance and risk management

Ensuring compliance with emerging AI regulations, implementing risk management frameworks for AI systems, and establishing data privacy and security protocols. Managing AI bias, transparency, and explainability requirements.

AI team building and capability development

Recruiting AI talent, establishing AI-focused teams, and developing AI training programs for existing staff. Building organizational AI literacy and establishing best practices for AI development and deployment.

Start with a written brief — AI maturity stage, sector, and days per week. Our structured five-stage vetting process matches you with the right fractional CAIO; most engagements open with an intensive strategy phase before settling into ongoing governance and implementation oversight.

05/ governance

Fractional AI governance officer — the part of the CAIO job regulators see

Many briefs for a fractional AI governance officer are the governance half of the Chief AI Officer role, bought on its own: an inventory of where AI is used, a risk assessment for each use, named owners, and a policy people actually follow. The UK has no single AI regulator. The government's pro-innovation approach to AI regulation relies on existing regulators applying cross-sector principles in their own sectors, so the obligations that bite depend on what you do and who regulates you.

Data protection is the regime most AI uses meet first. The ICO's guidance on AI and data protection covers the accountability and governance implications of AI, alongside fairness, transparency and individual rights. For a management-system approach, ISO/IEC 42001 specifies requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and improving an AI management system. A fractional governance lead typically sets this framework up, then oversees it on fewer days.

Where AI governance sits next to data protection or compliance, the seats overlap — see fractional DPO jobs. For the data estate the AI runs on, see fractional CDO jobs.

06/ consultant or officer

Fractional AI consultant — or a fractional Chief AI Officer?

A fractional AI consultant and a fractional CAIO are sold under overlapping titles, but they are different purchases. A consultant is usually engaged for a defined piece of work — an AI readiness review, a use-case shortlist, a vendor selection, a proof of concept — and hands it over. A fractional CAIO holds the seat: owns the AI roadmap, sits with the leadership team, answers to the board for AI risk, and is still there when a pilot has to become a production system.

Test which you need by asking who owns the decision once the work is done. If an existing CTO or COO will own it, a consultant may be enough; if nobody owns AI across the business, you are hiring for a seat. Either way, judge the work on how it selects, buys and deploys AI safely as well as on ambition — the government's AI Playbook, written for the public sector, is a useful checklist for any buyer.

Brief us with your stage, sector and the days a week, and we come back with a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out. For the engineering leadership that builds what the CAIO decides, see hire a fractional CTO.

07/ questions

Fractional CAIO FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in a fractional CAIO.

Submit a brief with your AI maturity stage, sector and the days per week you need — we run the brief through our five-stage vetting process and come back with a shortlist of 3–5.

Chief AI Officer is an emerging role without an established UK fractional day-rate benchmark, so we don't publish a figure we can't source — the market varies significantly. Cost is the day rate multiplied by the days per week; agree both, and the engagement length, in writing.

Flexibly around project milestones and regulatory deadlines. Engagements often start with an intensive strategy phase, then move to ongoing governance and implementation oversight.

Typically mid-market to enterprise companies implementing AI strategies, plus scale-ups developing AI products. Also established companies preparing for AI regulatory compliance or undergoing AI transformation.

They focus on strategy, governance, and oversight rather than hands-on development. They work with technical teams to ensure AI implementations align with business objectives and regulatory requirements.

The AI strategy and governance framework come first; improvements in AI project delivery and compliance posture take longer to show. Agree the success criteria, and when they will be measured, at the start of the engagement.

Fractional CAIOs are an ongoing part-time resource, a set number of days each week. Interim CAIOs are temporary full-time cover, usually for a specific AI transformation project.

Many have expertise in particular AI domains - machine learning, generative AI, computer vision, or NLP. This specialization allows them to bring proven AI implementation frameworks and vendor relationships.

Sets up and oversees how a business governs its use of AI: an inventory of AI uses, risk assessments, named owners and a working policy. In the UK that means mapping which regulators and rules apply — the ICO's guidance on AI and data protection is usually the first — and, where wanted, building an AI management system against ISO/IEC 42001.

Hire a fractional AI consultant for a defined piece of work — a readiness review, a vendor selection, a proof of concept — that someone else will own afterwards. Hire a fractional CAIO when nobody owns AI across the business and you need a person accountable for the roadmap and the risk on an ongoing basis.
