The brief

CPO for Hire: what must the role own?

Confirm the seat is product leadership, not people leadership.

  • 01Which CPOConfirm the seat is product leadership, not people leadership.
  • 02RoadmapWrite which priorities the CPO sets and which stay with the CEO.
  • 03DiscoverySay how product bets are tested before engineering builds them.
  • 04TeamName the product managers and designers the CPO leads.

Role reference: SFIA: product management skill. SFIA’s product management skill sets out levels of product responsibility, which helps place a CPO for hire above the product managers they lead.

For hire

CPO for hire: product or people?

CPO is two job titles. Settle which one before a single candidate is approached.

Chief product officer is the usual meaning in technology companies, and the one this page covers: the roadmap, discovery and the product team. Chief people officer is the same seat as a CHRO in many businesses.

For the product seat, a fractional CPO suits a company that needs product judgement on a few days a week; an interim CPO covers a departure or a reset of the roadmap; a permanent CPO suits a company with several product teams to lead.

The working pattern

What changes when the CPO is permanent?

On this page CPO means chief product officer: the executive who owns what gets built and why. Some companies use CPO for chief people officer; if that is the seat you need, see the CHRO for hire page.

The illustrative brief: a founder-led product with three product managers. The founder still sets every priority. Three product managers ship, but their roadmaps compete and customers see the joins.

The appointment owns: A fractional CPO for hire sets one product strategy and a quarterly prioritisation process, two days a week.

Another owner retains: The founder keeps the vision and pricing; engineering keeps how things are built.

The case is illustrative; it does not describe a Fractional Quest placement.

Assessment

How should you assess each candidate?

CPO for Hire on evidence: put the same work in front of each candidate before comparing answers.

  1. Comparable decision
Ask for a product strategy they owned and the evidence behind its priorities.
  2. Authority
Test a roadmap trade-off the founder would want to decide.
  3. Team
Ask how they grew product managers rather than managing the backlog themselves.
  4. Handover
Ask what decision record they left for the next product leader.

Acas recommends a consistent, fair selection process: choosing who to interview.

Vetting

What happens before anyone reaches your shortlist?

Five stages before a candidate reaches a shortlist of three to five.

  1. Pedigree screen
    Tenure
We verify prior tenure in the seat, at the scale and stage you need. No consultant presenting as an executive.
  2. Mandate fit
    Fit
Fit to your stage, sector and the problem the seat exists to solve, not a CV keyword.
  3. Reference deep-dive
    Verify
We take references ourselves, from recent clients and boards: what they delivered, not what they titled it.
  4. Shortlist
    Shortlist
Three to five candidates, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.
  5. Kick-off
    Start
Scope, first-month outcomes and the contract agreed before day one.

The full process is on how we vet.

Both are used. This page is about the chief product officer. For a chief people officer, the brief and the search are those of a CHRO.
