General Role Responsibilities

Establish and lead Indevor Group’s in-house legal function, providing responsive, pragmatic legal advice to the Board and Group businesses. Personally manage legal matters through to completion, protect the Group’s interests and develop the legal processes and capabilities required to support growth.

Role Specific Responsibilities:

Group Head of Legal – Property & Commercial

Overview

This is a newly created, hands-on appointment for an experienced property solicitor who wants to make the move from private practice into an influential in-house role. Reporting to the Board, the Group Head of Legal will provide commercially focused legal support across Indevor Group, with particular emphasis on the Estates team, development-related transactions and the transfer of land and infrastructure assets into Group ownership. Initially operating as the sole in-house solicitor, the postholder will personally deliver legal work while establishing the foundations for a legal function that can grow with the business.

Role Specific Tasks

The successful candidate will take ownership of legal matters across the Group, working collaboratively with the Board, Estates, technical and operational colleagues. Core responsibilities include:

  • Lead property and conveyancing transactions from negotiation, execution, completion and registration, including land and asset transfers into Group ownership.
  • Review Section 106 agreements, planning conditions, unilateral undertakings, deeds of variation and related planning obligations.
  • Draft, review and negotiate transfers, leases, licences, easements, covenants, deeds and access arrangements, addressing title restrictions, charges and other land issues.
  • Support SANG, greenspace, public open space and infrastructure adoptions, including access, maintenance, funding, endowments, developer obligations and long-term liabilities.
  • Work with teams on adoption arrangements for drainage, SuDS, pumping stations, highways, bridges, utilities and other managed infrastructure.
  • Advise on wider Group legal matters, including commercial contracts; investigate unfamiliar issues and instruct specialist advisers when appropriate.
  • Develop templates, precedents, checklists and records covering ownership, title, obligations, rights, funding and outstanding legal actions.
  • Manage external legal advisers and costs, bringing suitable work in-house and retaining specialist input where it adds value.
  • Present clear, practical options and risk assessments to the Board and senior leadership, recommending lawful and commercially workable solutions.
  • Support the longer-term development of the legal function, including future recruitment, supervision and training as business needs evolve.

The responsibilities outlined are representative of the principal duties associated with the role. All colleagues are expected to adopt a flexible approach, undertaking additional duties commensurate with the role and contributing to the wider success of the business where required.

Ideal Candidate Profile

We are seeking a qualified solicitor with at least five years’ post-qualification experience and substantial, recent hands-on experience in commercial property, development or related land transactions. Ideally currently working in private practice at Associate or Senior Associate level, the individual will be capable of managing transactions independently and enthusiastic about building a legal function while remaining directly involved in delivery.

  • Qualified solicitor with appropriate current practising status for the role and strong knowledge of property transactions in England and Wales.
  • At least five years’ post-qualification experience (excluding pre-qualification experience).
  • Proven practical experience of Section 106 agreements, land transfers and independent transaction management.
  • Strong drafting, negotiation, commercial judgement and problem-solving skills, with a proactive, hands-on approach.
  • Confidence advising senior stakeholders, challenging constructively and clearly communicating risks and recommendations.
  • Willingness to learn new legal disciplines, conduct effective research and identify when specialist advice is appropriate.
  • Ambition to take ownership of a new function and help shape its future development.
  • Additional Desirable Attributes

Experience of SANG, greenspace or infrastructure adoption, estate management and long-term stewardship would be advantageous. Previous management or leadership exposure is welcome, although an existing Head of Legal title is not essential. Wider commercial contracts experience, experience supervising junior colleagues and a genuine appetite to develop a legal team over time would also be valued.
