Fractional Finance Team · CFO, controller, bookkeeper

Fractional Finance Team · the whole function, part of the week

A fractional finance team is three roles bought as a unit rather than one at a time: a fractional CFO or finance director setting strategy and owning the board relationship, a fractional financial controller running management accounts and the month-end close, and a bookkeeper keeping the ledgers current.

Some companies call this an outsourced finance department, outsourced finance team or outsourced accounting team — the shape is the same.

This page sets out what each role in the team does, what it costs, and when to buy the whole team versus one seat.

We recruit fractional, interim, part-time, temporary and permanent finance leaders, and non-executive directors.

We come back with a shortlist of 3–5.

Current finance leadership roles

Fractional recruitment works differently from a permanent search — shorter, scoped by days a week, and priced on the engagement. Send a Finance team brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five vetted candidates.

01/ the role

What is a fractional finance team? three roles, one function

A fractional finance team is the finance function built from three roles, each bought for part of the week rather than full-time: a fractional CFO or finance director, a fractional financial controller, and a bookkeeper.

Some buy all three together — often called an outsourced finance department, outsourced finance team or outsourced accounting team; some buy one or two and keep the rest in-house or with an accountancy firm.

What each role owns

The CFO or finance director sets strategy, owns the board and investor relationship, and is accountable for the numbers.

The fractional financial controller runs the monthly close, management accounts and the controls that make those numbers reliable.

The bookkeeper keeps the ledgers current day to day: sales and purchase invoices, bank reconciliations, payroll inputs and VAT records — see fractional accountant jobs for the hands-on accounting and bookkeeping seats themselves.

02/ scope

When to buy the whole team

No finance function yet

An early-stage company with no finance hire at all usually needs the team, not one role: someone has to keep the books before there is anything for a CFO to report on.

One role is already covered

A company with an in-house bookkeeper or accountant often needs only the CFO/FD and controller layer above it.

A company with strong reporting but no senior finance voice in the room often needs only the CFO or FD.

Scaling past founder-led finance

The usual trigger for buying the full team at once is a founder who has been doing the books personally and a raise, a lender covenant or a board that now needs monthly numbers they can trust.

03/ the week

How a week divides.

Part of a week is the point of the model: the days you buy are yours, the rest of the week goes to other clients. Move the days a week and the week redraws.

07/ what it costs

What a fractional finance team costs by role

FD Capital publishes a UK fractional CFO/FD day rate of £700–£1,400, averaging around £1,050, with monthly retainers from £2,500 at one day a week to £10,000–£15,000 at three or more.

Accountancy Capital publishes a UK fractional Financial Controller day rate of £450–£650 in London/South East (£400–£550 regional), with retainers from £1,800 at one day a week to £7,800 at three.

No source we trust publishes a fractional bookkeeper day rate, so we do not quote one — every shortlist we send states each candidate’s day rate or pay, and a bookkeeping listing on our board shows "Rate not stated" rather than an invented figure.

Buying the roles separately through a fractional CFO service and a bookkeeper or outsourced accountant costs less than a full-time finance department, because each role is bought only for the days it is needed.

Our rate calculator turns a day rate and a number of days into a monthly and annual figure for any seat.

Fractional Finance Team FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in a fractional finance team.

Three finance roles bought as a unit for part of the week: a fractional CFO or finance director, a fractional financial controller, and a bookkeeper. Some call this an outsourced finance department, outsourced finance team or outsourced accounting team.
They describe the same shape: senior finance roles bought part of the week rather than as full-time hires. "Outsourced" is more often used when a firm supplies the people; "fractional" is more often used when you hire named individuals directly, which is how we recruit.
It varies by role: FD Capital publishes a UK fractional CFO/FD day rate of £700–£1,400 (avg ~£1,050); Accountancy Capital publishes a fractional Financial Controller day rate of £450–£650 in London/South East. No fractional bookkeeper benchmark exists; we state each candidate’s day rate or pay on the shortlist.
Depends on what exists already. No finance hire at all usually means you need the whole team. An in-house bookkeeper or accountant often means you only need the CFO/FD and controller layer above it.
Send the brief: what exists today, the gap, and the days a week for each role. We send a shortlist of 3–5 per role, each with day rate or pay, availability and IR35 position set out, after our five-stage vetting.
