Hire a CAIO — what to decide first
The first question when you set out to hire a CAIO is whether the work needs an executive seat at all.
If nobody owns AI across the business and the board wants one accountable person for it, hire a CAIO part-time and let the days follow the programme.
If the job is building and shipping models rather than setting policy and risk appetite, a fractional head of AI is closer to it.
If one bounded question needs answering, such as a readiness review or a vendor choice, the consultant route set out on this page may be enough.
A permanent Chief AI Officer makes sense once AI is central to the product or the operating model and there is a full week of decisions for one person to take.
Before you hire a CAIO, draw the line between the seat and its neighbours.

A fractional AI consultant and a fractional CAIO are sold under overlapping titles, but they are different purchases.
A consultant is usually engaged for a defined piece of work — an AI readiness review, a use-case shortlist, a vendor selection, a proof of concept — and hands it over.
A fractional CAIO holds the seat: owns the AI roadmap, sits with the leadership team, answers to the board for AI risk, and is still there when a pilot has to become a production system.
Test which you need by asking who owns the decision once the work is done.
If an existing CTO or COO will own it, a consultant may be enough; if nobody owns AI across the business, you are hiring for a seat.
