Interim head of AI salary · day rates, 2026

What an interim head of AI earns, by the day and by the assignment

An interim head of AI salary is a day rate, not a salary.

Robert Walters’ 2026 survey puts the contract day rate for a London head of AI or machine learning at £800–£1,250, with an average of £1,000, paid through PAYE.

IT Jobs Watch puts the median advertised contract rate for a head of AI at £844 a day, on 16 ads over the six months to 5 October 2026.

An interim works full-time for a fixed term, paid only for the days worked, with no salary, pension or paid holiday from the client.

When you hire an interim head of AI through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Interim technology roles on the board

How fractional recruitment agencies compare is set out in one place, including how we work: a Interim head of AI brief and a shortlist of three to five.

01/ the role

How an interim head of AI is paid, and why the unit is the day

An interim head of AI holds the seat full-time for a defined period: after a departure, through a first AI programme, or to get the data and the rules in place before a permanent hire.

The client pays a day rate for each day worked.

There is no salary, no employer pension and no paid holiday, and the assignment ends when the work does.

That makes the day rate the real unit of pay.

Across all functions, the Institute of Interim Management’s 2026 survey puts the average assignment at 10.0 months, the average gap between assignments at 3.2 months and the average days billed in a year at 148.

The interim carries those gaps.

An interim who works through their own company pays themselves through salary and dividends from what the company earns, after its costs and Corporation Tax.

The day rate is the company’s income, not the interim’s take-home pay.

02/ scope

How to hire an interim head of AI

1. Define the mandate and its end

Say what the interim must deliver and by when: an inventory of where AI is already used, a data check, an AI policy, a first use in daily operation, a handover to a permanent hire.

A mandate with an end date is easier to price and to judge.

Two published references help scope the policy work: ISO/IEC 42001, the international standard for an AI management system, and NIST’s voluntary AI Risk Management Framework.

The OECD AI Principles set out what trustworthy AI means in plain terms.

2. Decide IR35 status at the start

If your business is medium or large, you make the status determination for the engagement and give the interim your reasons.

Settle it before you go to market, because it changes the rate candidates quote.

3. Match the record to the mandate

Ask for one AI use the candidate took from pilot to daily use: the data it needed, the data protection work, what it cost to run and what went wrong.

The ICO’s guidance on AI and data protection sets out what that work involves.

What we do on an interim brief

We recruit interim, fractional, part-time, temporary and permanent technology leaders, and non-executive directors.

We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

If the work fits into part of the week, see fractional head of AI jobs.

05/ rates by stage

Interim head of AI salary day rates by source and region

Day rates as each source states them, all 2026. Robert Walters, a recruiter, publishes contract day rates (PAYE) of advertised roles, under the title it uses for each region. IT Jobs Watch counts rates quoted in contract job ads over six months. Neither is labelled interim. The IIM figures cover interim managers in every function.

Interim pay and IR35: who decides, and what it changes

Tax status turns on how the engagement runs, not on the title or the contract alone.

Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the interim’s own company decides.

The rules apply contract by contract, so one interim can have engagements on both sides.

It shows in the rates.

The IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average interim day rate at £949 outside IR35 and £830 inside, across all functions.

08/ head of ai day rate

Head of AI day rate by region and by title

The head of AI day rate in Robert Walters’ 2026 survey is highest in London, at £800–£1,250 a day with an average of £1,000, paid through PAYE.

Outside London it publishes the combined title head of machine learning or head of data science: £900–£1,000 a day in the North and £800–£1,200 in the South.

Job ads quote a little less.

IT Jobs Watch counted 16 contract head of AI ads with a day rate in the six months to 5 October 2026, at a median of £844 and a range from £665 to £1,200.

The same months of 2025 had a median of £900, on 5 rates.

A sample that small moves easily, so read it with the count.

The step above pays more at the top.

Robert Walters puts a London VP or director of AI and machine learning at £900–£1,700 a day, though its average, £1,000, matches the head of AI figure.

09/ interim head of artificial intelligence salary

Interim head of artificial intelligence salary, annualised

An interim head of artificial intelligence salary is a figure people search for, but no interim is paid one.

To compare, multiply the day rate by the days worked.

At Robert Walters’ London average of £1,000, 220 days would bill £220,000.

At the IIM’s all-function average of 148 days billed in a year, the same rate bills £148,000.

Both are our arithmetic, a comparison and not a salary.

On IT Jobs Watch’s median of £844, 148 days bills £124,912 and 220 days £185,680 (our arithmetic).

A full month of cover, at about 22 working days and £1,000 a day, comes to £22,000 (our arithmetic).

That is the client’s cost; the interim pays their own pension, holidays and the gaps between assignments out of it.

For scale, Robert Half’s 2026 median for a permanent head of AI is £157,250 in base salary, before bonus, pension and employer’s National Insurance.

See head of AI salary for the permanent benchmarks in full.

10/ the other routes

Interim, permanent or part of the week: which pay basis fits

Interim cover buys a full-time head of AI for a fixed period.

A permanent hire is paid a salary and package; see head of AI salary.

If the work fits into part of the week, a fractional head of AI on a day rate may cost less over the same months; we have not found a published fractional head of AI rate we can source, so see fractional head of AI jobs for how those roles are scoped, and fractional head of AI salary for the permanent salary spread across part-week days (our arithmetic).

If the board wants an executive accountable for AI, the seat is a chief AI officer: see fractional chief AI officer.

11/ questions

Interim head of AI salary FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in an interim head of AI.

No survey publishes an interim head of AI rate by that name. Robert Walters’ 2026 survey puts the London head of AI contract rate at £800–£1,250 a day, with an average of £1,000 (PAYE). IT Jobs Watch’s median advertised contract rate is £844, from 16 ads. Across all interim functions, the IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average at £907.
An interim head of AI is paid a day rate rather than a salary. At £1,000 a day, 220 days would bill £220,000 and the IIM’s average of 148 days billed would bill £148,000 (our arithmetic). That is gross income, before the interim’s costs, pension and tax.
Robert Walters publishes the combined title head of machine learning or head of data science outside London: £900–£1,000 a day in the North (average £955) and £800–£1,200 in the South (average £950), as PAYE contract rates.
At about 22 working days and £1,000 a day, a month of full-time cover comes to £22,000 (our arithmetic). At IT Jobs Watch’s £844 median, the same month is £18,568 (our arithmetic).
The day rate times the days. At £1,000 a day, a month of about 22 working days is £22,000 (our arithmetic). If the engagement falls inside IR35, the deemed employer deducts Income Tax and employee National Insurance from the fees and pays employer’s National Insurance (HMRC). We set out the day rate for every candidate on the shortlist.
Across all interim functions, the IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average assignment at 10.0 months and the average gap between assignments at 3.2 months. No source we can cite publishes a figure for head of AI assignments alone.
It depends on how the engagement runs. A medium or large client makes the status determination; a small private-sector client leaves it to the interim’s own company (HMRC). The IIM’s 2026 survey puts average day rates at £949 outside IR35 and £830 inside, across all functions.
