When
When to hire a fractional CRO first
A fractional CRO fits when revenue needs one owner but not a full week of one.
Many companies hire a fractional CRO to set the revenue system and define the permanent role, then hire permanently.
The working pattern
What changes when the CRO is permanent?
A CRO owns the revenue system end to end. Until there are separate functions to align, a strong head of sales is usually enough.
The illustrative brief: a company outgrowing founder-led sales. Three revenue leads report to the CEO and each reports a different pipeline.
The appointment owns: The company hires a CRO to own one revenue plan and forecast.
Another owner retains: The CEO keeps pricing and strategy.
The case is illustrative; it does not describe a Fractional Quest placement.

Assessment
How should you assess CRO candidates?
Put the same work and evidence in front of each candidate before comparing answers.
- Comparable decisionAsk for a revenue system they unified.
- AuthorityTest a pricing decision on the CEO line.
- TeamAsk how they led three function heads.
- HandoverAsk what they left a successor.
Acas recommends a consistent, fair selection process: choosing who to interview.
Vetting
What happens before anyone reaches your shortlist?
Five stages before a candidate reaches a shortlist of three to five.
- Pedigree screenTenureWe verify prior tenure in the seat, at the scale and stage you need. No consultant presenting as an executive.
- Mandate fitFitFit to your stage, sector and the problem the seat exists to solve, not a CV keyword.
- Reference deep-diveVerifyWe take references ourselves, from recent clients and boards: what they delivered, not what they titled it.
- ShortlistShortlistThree to five candidates, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.
- Kick-offStartScope, first-month outcomes and the contract agreed before day one.
The full process is on how we vet.
The right pattern
Does this hiring pattern fit the work?
Test the amount of the week, the expected end and the continuity needed before writing the contract.
