Marketing director jobs · permanent, interim and fractional
Marketing director jobs are senior roles that own a company’s marketing strategy and the function that delivers it, usually reporting to the CEO or managing director. The board below lists the marketing director roles on our board, permanent roles first where the posting says full-time, with head of marketing roles beside them.
We recruit permanent, interim, fractional and part-time marketing directors. On every brief we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, after five-stage vetting.

Fractional recruitment works differently from a permanent search — shorter, scoped by days a week, and priced on the engagement. Send a marketing director brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five vetted candidates.
01/ the role
Marketing director jobs: the seat and what the board lists
A marketing director owns where the company competes and how it is seen: the marketing strategy, the brand, the budget and the team that runs campaigns, content, digital channels and research. In a mid-sized business the marketing director is the most senior marketer and sits on the leadership team. In a larger one the seat may report to a CMO and run a division, a region or a brand.
The board below lists marketing director roles, with head of marketing roles beside them, because employers advertise overlapping seats under both titles. Where a posting says full-time we list it as permanent and show those first; interim and fractional roles follow under their own labels. When there are few, the board widens to marketing leadership roles and says so.
For what the seat involves day to day, see what a marketing director does; for the documents employers write, the marketing director job description.
02/ scope
How to get a marketing director job
1. Show strategy and a budget, with results
Most marketing directors come up through marketing manager and head of marketing seats; the National Careers Service sets out the routes into marketing management. For the full career path, see how to become a marketing director. When you apply, lead with the strategy you set, the budget you held and what it returned, in numbers a referee can confirm.
2. Carry the credentials
CIM’s Chartered Marketer status (graded membership, two consecutive years of CPD and an online assessment) is the profession’s own mark. The Marketing Society, a membership body for senior marketers, is where to meet the people who hire for the seat. If the role takes a board seat, the IoD’s Chartered Director programme covers what the board will expect of you.
3. Prepare for the interview
Expect a case on the employer’s own market, a budget question and a compliance question. A marketing director answers for what the company says: the CAP Code enforced by the Advertising Standards Authority, and the ICO’s direct marketing and PECR guidance for email, text and calls.

05/ vacancies
Marketing director vacancies: what the title does and does not mean
Marketing director vacancies use the word "director" loosely. Some are board appointments; many are senior job titles with no seat on the board. A company director is legally responsible for running the company and its filings at Companies House, so ask at interview whether you would be appointed as a director and what that means for your duties.
Read the scope as well as the title. A marketing director in a business with no CMO sets the strategy; one below a CMO usually runs a brand, a region or a channel. If the vacancy is mostly team and campaigns, it is closer to a head of marketing seat; see head of marketing salary for how the pay compares.
06/ permanent jobs
Permanent marketing director jobs: what the seat pays
Robert Half’s 2026 salary guide puts a full-time marketing director at £70,000 at the 25th percentile, £79,500 at the median and £90,000 at the 75th. Its median for a head of marketing is £66,250 and for a CMO £147,000. These are base salaries; bonus and benefits vary by employer.
On day one your employer must give you a written statement of employment particulars, covering job title or a description of the work, pay, hours and holiday. For the full pay picture, see marketing director salary.
