Interim procurement director salary · day rates, 2026
What an interim procurement director earns, by the day and by the assignment
An interim procurement director is paid a day rate, not a salary.
Robert Walters’ 2026 salary survey puts the PAYE contract rate for a procurement director at £950–£1,200 a day in the South of England, with an average of £1,100, and at £800–£1,200 in the North.
In the Midlands it gives £750–£1,000.
The interim procurement director salary is the rate times the days: full-time work for a fixed period, with no salary, pension or paid holiday behind it.
When you hire an interim procurement director through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

01/ the role
How an interim procurement director is paid, and why the unit is the day
An interim procurement director holds the procurement seat full-time for a defined period: a departure, a cost-reduction programme, a supplier crisis, a new purchase-to-pay system or the gap before a permanent hire.
The interim is paid for the days worked.
For the role itself, see what a procurement director does.
That makes the day rate the real unit of pay.
There is no salary, no employer pension and no paid holiday, and the interim carries the gaps between assignments.
Across all functions, the Institute of Interim Management’s 2026 survey puts the average assignment at 10.0 months, the average gap between assignments at 3.2 months and the average days billed in a year at 148.
Robert Walters publishes its rates as PAYE contract rates: paid through a payroll, not invoiced by the interim’s own company.
An interim who does work through their own company pays themselves through salary and dividends from what the company earns, after its costs and Corporation Tax.
Either way, the rate is not take-home pay.
02/ scope
How to hire an interim procurement director
1. Define the mandate and its end
Say what the interim must deliver and by when: savings on named categories, a renegotiated supplier base, a stable supply chain, a handover to a permanent hire.
A mandate with an end date is easier to price and to judge.
Name the rules the work runs under too.
A public body buys under the Procurement Act 2023.
A large company has a statutory duty to report on its payment practices, and the Home Office’s transparency in supply chains guidance sets out how to keep modern slavery out of the supply chain.
Supplier dealings sit inside the company’s anti-bribery procedures.
2. Decide IR35 status at the start
If your business is medium or large, you make the status determination for the engagement and give the interim your reasons.
Settle it before you go to market, because it changes how the rate is paid.
3. Match the record to the mandate
Ask for outcomes from comparable assignments: the savings delivered, the contracts re-let, the risks closed.
No qualification is required by law, but many senior interims hold MCIPS, the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply’s professional standard.

Interim procurement director salary day rates by region and seniority
Day rates as each publisher states them, all 2026. Robert Walters publishes ranges and averages (means) of PAYE contract rates from roles advertised over 12 months, for the Midlands, the North and the South of England; it publishes no London table for these seats. Robert Walters is a recruiter. The IIM figures cover every interim function, not procurement alone.
05/ economics
Interim pay and IR35: who decides, and what it changes
Tax status turns on how the engagement runs, not on the title or the contract alone.
Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the interim’s own company decides.
The rules apply contract by contract, so one interim can have engagements on both sides.
It shows in the rates.
The IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average interim day rate at £949 outside IR35 and £830 inside, across all functions.
HMRC’s CEST tool gives its view on a specific engagement.
Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

07/ interim procurement director day rate
Interim procurement director day rate by region and seniority
The interim procurement director day rate rises from the Midlands to the South.
Robert Walters puts the PAYE contract rate at £950–£1,200 in the South of England (average £1,100), £800–£1,200 in the North (average £1,000) and £750–£1,000 in the Midlands (average £865).
Seniority moves it too.
In the South, Robert Walters puts a head of procurement at £900–£1,100 a day (average £1,020) and a chief procurement officer at £1,200–£1,800 (average £1,555).
No source we can cite publishes a London rate for this seat.
08/ the year
What the day rate comes to over a year
No interim is paid a salary, but the rate can be annualised for comparison.
At Robert Walters’ £1,100 South average, 220 days would bill £242,000; at the IIM’s all-function average of 148 days billed in a year, the same rate bills £162,800.
At the £1,000 North average the figures are £220,000 and £148,000, and at the £865 Midlands average £190,300 and £128,020.
All are our arithmetic, a comparison and not a salary.
A full month of interim cover, at about 22 working days and the £1,100 South average, comes to £24,200 (our arithmetic).
The interim pays their own pension, holidays and the gaps between assignments out of it.
For scale, Robert Walters’ 2026 average for a permanent procurement director in a large enterprise in the South is £135,405 in basic salary, before bonus, pension and employer’s National Insurance.
See procurement director salary for the permanent benchmarks in full.
09/ the other routes
Interim or permanent: which pay basis fits
Interim cover buys a full-time procurement leader for a fixed period, paid by the day.
A permanent hire is paid a salary and package, with notice on both sides; see procurement director salary, and the open procurement director jobs.
