Live procurement and operations roles

Fractional recruiting starts with the brief, not the CV pile. Send a Procurement Director brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five candidates, each through five-stage vetting.

01/ the role

What a procurement director does, and what sets the pay

A procurement director owns how the business buys: the category strategy, the supplier base, the contracts and the risk in the supply chain, usually reporting to the chief operating officer or the finance director. For the role in full, see what a procurement director does.

Pay follows the spend and the risk. Exec Capital ties its £90,000–£160,000 base band to businesses with significant supply chain complexity and procurement spend, typically £50m or more a year, and notes a premium for directors with a record in supply chain resilience. In the public sector the director also answers to the rules of the Procurement Act 2023.

Indeed’s average is built from salaries in job postings over three years, agency postings among them, so read it as advertised pay rather than agreed packages. Exec Capital’s band is base pay only.

02/ scope

How to hire a procurement director

1. Scope the seat

Write down what the role owns: direct or indirect spend, categories, the supplier base, contract management, risk and ESG reporting. Say how much spend is under management, how large the team is and who the role reports to.

2. Choose the route

A permanent procurement director suits a business whose spend needs an owner every day; see the open procurement director jobs. For full-time cover with an end date, see interim procurement director jobs.

3. Check the qualification and set the package

No qualification is required by law, but the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply awards MCIPS, which it describes as the globally recognised standard of excellence for the profession. The CIPD’s introduction to reward separates guaranteed base pay from variable pay; tie any bonus to savings, supplier performance or risk measures the role controls.

What we do on a procurement brief

We recruit permanent, fractional, interim, part-time and temporary procurement leaders, and non-executive directors. We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

Salary or day rate: what the seat costs you

A salary is not the whole cost of an employee. For 2026 to 2027, employer’s National Insurance is 15% on earnings above £5,000 a year (HMRC rates and thresholds). Under automatic enrolment, the employer must pay at least 3% into a workplace pension on qualifying earnings, and those earnings include bonuses (GOV.UK).

No source we can verify publishes a day rate for an interim or fractional procurement director, so we do not quote one; every shortlist states each candidate’s day rate. A day rate does not compare one for one with a salary. Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination. Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.
