Interim operations director salary · day rates, 2026

What an interim operations director earns, by the day and by the assignment

An interim operations director is paid a day rate, not a salary.

Exec Capital publishes £500–£900 a day at SMEs up to £20m revenue and £800–£1,400 in the mid-market (£20m–£75m).

Robert Walters’ 2026 survey puts PAYE contract rates for an operations director at £600–£1,300 a day, in its logistics and manufacturing tables for the Midlands, North and South.

An interim operations director salary over a year depends on the days billed, not the rate alone.

When you hire an interim operations director through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Interim operations roles on the board

How fractional recruitment agencies compare is set out in one place, including how we work: a Interim Operations Director brief and a shortlist of three to five.

01/ the role

How an interim operations director is paid, and why the unit is the day

An interim operations director runs operations full-time for a defined period: a departure, a turnaround, a new site, a supply chain restructure or an integration after an acquisition.

The interim is paid for the days worked, usually through their own limited company or, on a PAYE contract, through payroll.

That makes the day rate the real unit of pay.

There is no salary, no employer pension and no paid holiday, and the interim carries the gaps between assignments.

Across all functions, the Institute of Interim Management’s 2026 survey puts the average assignment at 10.0 months, the average gap between assignments at 3.2 months and the average days billed in a year at 148.

An interim who works through their own company pays themselves through salary and dividends from what the company earns, after its costs and Corporation Tax.

The day rate is the company’s income, not the interim’s take-home pay.

02/ scope

How to hire an interim operations director

1. Define the mandate and its end

Say what the interim must deliver and by when: a site stabilised, a cost target met, a supplier base consolidated, a handover to a permanent hire.

Exec Capital prices a turnaround or crisis mandate at £1,000–£1,600 a day, so say which kind of mandate it is.

Where suppliers are the heart of it, the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply is the professional body for procurement and supply.

An integration after an acquisition can bring a TUPE transfer, and Acas sets out what both employers must do.

2. Decide IR35 status at the start

If your business is medium or large, you make the status determination for the engagement and give the interim your reasons.

Settle it before you go to market, because it changes the rate candidates quote.

The Institute of Interim Management is the membership body for interim managers.

3. Put health and safety in the brief

In manufacturing, logistics and many service operations, the operations seat carries much of the health and safety load.

The HSE’s Leading health and safety at work sets out what it expects of directors and board members.

Roles on the board are on interim operations director jobs.

What we do on an interim brief

We recruit interim, fractional, part-time, temporary and permanent operations leaders, and non-executive directors.

We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

Fractional, interim or permanent?

Four taps. The answer names the route for the seat and the page that covers it.

How much of the week does the work fill?
Is there a fixed end or a programme?
Does the seat sit on the board for years?
Is the need now, or can it wait for a search?

The route · Fractional

A fractional operations director.

The work fills part of the week, so buy the days it needs.

A fractional operations director holds the seat on agreed days for as long as the seat is needed, and works for other clients on the rest.

Interim operations director salary day rates by mandate, region and source

Day rates as each publisher states them, all 2026. Exec Capital’s bands are a recruiter’s published ranges by mandate. Robert Walters’ rates are PAYE contract rates (paid through payroll) from advertised roles, with its average beside each range. The IIM figures cover every interim function, not operations alone.

Interim pay and IR35: who decides, and what it changes

Tax status turns on how the engagement runs, not on the title or the contract alone.

Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the interim’s own company decides.

The rules apply contract by contract, so one interim can have engagements on both sides.

It shows in the rates.

The IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average interim day rate at £949 outside IR35 and £830 inside, across all functions.

HMRC’s CEST tool gives its view on a specific engagement.

Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

A PAYE contract rate, the basis of Robert Walters’ figures, is paid through payroll with tax deducted at source.

It does not compare one for one with a rate invoiced by the interim’s own limited company.

08/ interim operations director day rate

Interim operations director day rate by mandate and region

The interim operations director day rate rises with the size and risk of the mandate.

Exec Capital puts an SME interim (up to £20m revenue) at £500–£900 a day and a mid-market one (£20m–£75m) at £800–£1,400.

A PE-backed or complex operation pays £1,000–£1,800, and a turnaround or crisis £1,000–£1,600.

Robert Walters prints PAYE contract rates for the role in its logistics tables: £600–£1,200 a day in the Midlands and the South, with an average of £950 in both, and £850–£1,300 in the North, with an average of £1,075.

Its manufacturing table for the North gives £650–£1,000, with an average of £825.

It prints no London table for the role.

For scale, the IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average interim day rate across all functions at £907, and £1,004 in the private sector.

09/ the year

What the day rate comes to over a year

No interim is paid a salary.

To compare, multiply the day rate by the days worked.

At Exec Capital’s mid-market £800–£1,400, 220 days would bill £176,000–£308,000; that is a ceiling, a full working year with no gaps.

At the IIM’s average of 148 days billed in a year, the same band bills £118,400–£207,200.

Both are day rate × days, our arithmetic, and not a salary.

That is the client’s cost and the interim’s gross income.

Out of it the interim pays their own pension, holidays, insurance and the gaps between assignments, which the IIM puts at 3.2 months on average.

For scale, IT Jobs Watch puts the median advertised salary for a permanent operations director at £100,000, before bonus, pension and employer’s National Insurance.

Interim operations director salary FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in an interim operations director.

Exec Capital publishes an interim operations director day rate of £500–£900 at SMEs, £800–£1,400 in the mid-market, £1,000–£1,800 at PE-backed or complex operations and £1,000–£1,600 for a turnaround. Robert Walters’ 2026 PAYE contract rates run from £600 to £1,300 a day, with averages of £825–£1,075. Those rates are the interim operations director salary in practice.
An interim is paid by the day, not a salary. At Exec Capital’s mid-market £800–£1,400 a day, 220 days would bill £176,000–£308,000 and the IIM’s average of 148 days billed would bill £118,400–£207,200 (day rate × days, our arithmetic). That is gross income, before the interim’s own costs, pension and tax.
Exec Capital puts a turnaround or crisis mandate at £1,000–£1,600 a day and a PE-backed or complex operation at £1,000–£1,800.
Define the mandate and its end, decide IR35 status before you go to market, and put health and safety in the brief. See hire an interim operations director.
The day rate times the days. At Exec Capital’s mid-market £800–£1,400 a day, 148 days cost £118,400–£207,200 (our arithmetic). There is no employer’s National Insurance or pension on top when the interim works outside IR35 through their own company. We set out the day rate for every candidate on the shortlist.
Across all interim functions, the IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average assignment at 10.0 months and the average gap between assignments at 3.2 months.
It depends on how the engagement runs. A medium or large client makes the status determination; a small private-sector client leaves it to the interim’s own company (HMRC). The IIM’s 2026 survey puts average day rates at £949 outside IR35 and £830 inside, across all functions.
A day rate paid through payroll, with tax deducted at source, rather than invoiced by the interim’s own company. Robert Walters publishes its operations director contract rates on that basis: £600–£1,300 a day across its Midlands, North and South tables.
