Interim operations manager salary · day rates, 2026
What an interim operations manager earns, by the day and by the assignment
An interim operations manager is paid a day rate, not a salary.
No source publishes an interim-only figure, so the interim operations manager salary is read from contract day rates.
IT Jobs Watch puts the median contract day rate at £525, from 64 rates in UK job ads over the six months to 5 October 2026, with a range from £331 to £800.
The rate covers full-time work for a fixed period, with no salary, pension or paid holiday behind it.
When you need cover, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

01/ the role
How an interim operations manager is paid, and why the unit is the day
An interim operations manager runs a site, a team or a process full-time for a defined period: a vacancy, a peak, a system go-live or a restructure.
The interim invoices the business for the days worked, either through their own limited company or through an agency or umbrella payroll.
One supplied by an agency to work temporarily for you is an agency worker, with rights of their own.
That makes the day rate the real unit of pay.
There is no salary, no employer pension and no paid holiday, and the interim carries the gaps between assignments.
Across all functions, the Institute of Interim Management’s 2026 survey puts the average assignment at 10.0 months, the average gap between assignments at 3.2 months and the average days billed in a year at 148.
How the rate reaches the interim depends on the route.
One who works through their own company pays themselves through salary and dividends from what the company earns, after its costs and Corporation Tax.
One paid through an umbrella company is that company’s employee, with tax and National Insurance taken through its payroll.
02/ scope
How to hire an interim operations manager
1. Define the assignment and its end
Say what the interim must deliver and by when: a stable shift pattern, a go-live, a peak season, a handover to a permanent hire.
A defined end date makes the rate easier to agree.
2. Decide IR35 status at the start
If your business is medium or large, you make the status determination for the engagement and give the interim your reasons.
Settle it before you go to market, because it changes the rate candidates quote.
3. Match the record to the operation
Ask for outcomes from comparable assignments: the warehouse, line or service desk they ran, the numbers on arrival and on exit.
A logistics operation needs someone who has run one.
On a site, the operations manager often runs day-to-day health and safety, so check they know the HSE’s guidance on managing health and safety.
What we do on an interim brief
We recruit interim, fractional, part-time, temporary and permanent operations leaders, and non-executive directors.
We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.
If the seat needs a permanent owner after the interim, hire an operations manager on that basis.

04/ the route
Fractional, interim or permanent?
Four taps. The answer names the route for the seat and the page that covers it.
The route · Fractional
A fractional operations manager. The work fills part of the week, so buy the days it needs.
A fractional operations manager holds the seat on agreed days for as long as the seat is needed, and works for other clients on the rest.
The route · Interim
An interim operations manager. The work fills the week, and it has an end: a programme, a cover, a transaction.
An interim operations manager takes the seat full time for that stretch and hands it over when it is done.
The route · Interim, then permanent
Interim now, a permanent operations manager after. The seat is full time and long term, and the need is now.
An interim operations manager holds it while the permanent search runs, so the seat is not left empty.
The route · Permanent
A permanent operations manager.A full-time seat that sits at the table for years is a permanent hire.
There is time to run a search, so run one.
05/ rates by stage
Interim operations manager salary contract day rates by source
Day rates as each publisher states them, all 2026. Neither seat-specific source separates interim from contract work. IT Jobs Watch counts day rates advertised in UK IT job ads. Robert Walters, a recruiter, publishes PAYE contract rates (paid through payroll) from its 2026 survey, with no London table for this role. The IIM figures cover interim managers in every function, not operations managers alone.

Interim pay and IR35: who decides, and what it changes
Tax status turns on how the engagement runs, not on the title or the contract alone.
Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the interim’s own company decides.
The rules apply contract by contract, so one interim can have engagements on both sides.
It shows in the rates.
The IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average interim day rate at £949 outside IR35 and £830 inside, across all functions.
HMRC’s CEST tool gives its view on a specific engagement.
Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

08/ interim operations manager day rate
Interim operations manager day rate by region and sector
The interim operations manager day rate depends on the operation.
IT Jobs Watch puts the median contract rate at £525 a day, and the middle half of the 64 advertised rates at £448–£652, in the six months to 5 October 2026.
Outside London the median was £586; in London, from 41 ads, £525.
Robert Walters’ 2026 survey gives PAYE contract rates by region.
In logistics, an operations manager is paid £240–£400 a day in the Midlands and the South and £300–£500 in the North.
For manufacturing in the North, Robert Walters gives £650–£1,000, with an average of £825.
The two sources count different markets.
IT Jobs Watch reads IT job ads, where many operations managers run service or security operations.
Robert Walters’ rates are paid through payroll, not invoiced by a limited company.
09/ the year
An interim salary, annualised: what the day rate comes to
No interim is paid a salary.
To compare, multiply the day rate by the days worked.
At the £525 median, 220 days would bill £115,500.
At the IIM’s all-function average of 148 days billed in a year, the same rate bills £77,700.
Both are our arithmetic, a comparison and not a salary.
A full month of interim cover, at about 22 working days and the £525 median, comes to £11,550 (our arithmetic).
That is the client’s cost.
The interim pays their own pension, holidays, insurance and the gaps between assignments out of it.
For scale, IT Jobs Watch’s median advertised permanent salary for the role is £60,000, before employer’s National Insurance and workplace pension contributions.

10/ the other routes
Interim, permanent or fractional: which pay basis fits
Interim cover buys a full-time operations manager for a fixed period.
A permanent hire is paid a salary; see operations manager salary.
If the work fits into part of the week, a fractional operations manager on set days may cost less over the same months.
For the permanent salary spread across part-week days (our arithmetic, not a market rate), see fractional operations manager salary.
If the seat leads the whole function, see interim head of operations salary or interim operations director salary.
