Interim managing director salary · day rates, 2026
What an interim managing director earns, by the day and by the assignment
An interim managing director salary is a day rate, not a salary.
Exec Capital, a recruiter, puts an interim MD at £600–£1,000 a day in an SME (up to £10m revenue), £900–£1,500 in the mid-market (£10m–£50m) and £1,200–£2,000 on a PE-backed or turnaround mandate.
Across every interim function, the IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average at £907 a day.
The rate covers full-time work for a fixed period, with no salary, pension or paid holiday behind it.
When you hire an interim managing director through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

01/ the role
How an interim managing director is paid, and why the unit is the day
An interim managing director runs the business full-time for a defined period: after a departure, through a turnaround, an acquisition or a sale, or while a permanent search runs.
Exec Capital says most interim MD engagements run three to nine months.
The interim invoices the business for the days worked.
The IoD describes the managing director as the executive responsible for the company’s performance, as dictated by the board’s strategy.
That makes the day rate the real unit of pay.
There is no salary, no employer pension and no paid holiday, and the interim carries the gaps between assignments.
Across all functions, the Institute of Interim Management’s 2026 survey puts the average assignment at 10.0 months, the average gap between assignments at 3.2 months and the average days billed in a year at 148.
An interim who works through their own company pays themselves through salary and dividends from what the company earns, after its costs and Corporation Tax.
The day rate is the company’s income, not the interim’s take-home pay.
02/ scope
How to hire an interim managing director
1. Define the mandate and its end
Say what the interim must deliver and by when: stabilise trading, complete an integration, hand over to a permanent MD.
Exec Capital says six to eight weeks suits urgent stabilisation or a defined project, and nine to twelve months a complex turnaround or a post-acquisition integration.
2. Decide IR35 status at the start
If your business is medium or large, you make the status determination for the engagement and give the interim your reasons.
Settle it before you go to market, because it changes the rate candidates quote.
3. Decide whether the interim joins the board
A company director is legally responsible for running the company (GOV.UK), so an interim appointed to the board takes those duties on with the post.
Agree the title, the authority and the reporting line in the contract.
Those duties include the duty to promote the success of the company.
On a turnaround, the Insolvency Service’s guidance on director duties upon insolvency applies if the company cannot pay its debts.
What we do on an interim brief
We recruit interim, fractional, part-time, temporary and permanent executives, and non-executive directors.
We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

04/ the route
Fractional, interim or permanent?
Four taps. The answer names the route for the seat and the page that covers it.
The route · Fractional
A fractional managing director. The work fills part of the week, so buy the days it needs.
A fractional managing director holds the seat on agreed days for as long as the seat is needed, and works for other clients on the rest.
The route · Interim
An interim managing director. The work fills the week, and it has an end: a programme, a cover, a transaction.
An interim managing director takes the seat full time for that stretch and hands it over when it is done.
The route · Interim, then permanent
Interim now, a permanent managing director after. The seat is full time and long term, and the need is now.
An interim managing director holds it while the permanent search runs, so the seat is not left empty.
The route · Permanent
A permanent managing director.A full-time seat that sits at the table for years is a permanent hire.
There is time to run a search, so run one.
05/ rates by stage
Interim managing director salary day rates by mandate
Day rates as each publisher states them, all 2026. Exec Capital is a recruiter and these are its published ranges, not survey data. Robert Walters, also a recruiter, reports a PAYE contract rate from roles it saw advertised. The IIM figures cover every interim function, not managing directors alone. The interim CEO band is a comparison for the top seat.
06/ economics
Interim pay and IR35: who decides, and what it changes
Tax status turns on how the engagement runs, not on the title or the contract alone.
Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the interim’s own company decides.
The rules apply contract by contract, so one interim can have engagements on both sides.
It shows in the rates.
The IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average interim day rate at £949 outside IR35 and £830 inside, across all functions.
HMRC’s CEST tool gives its view on a specific engagement.
Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

08/ interim md day rates
Interim MD day rates by size and ownership
The interim MD day rate rises with the size of the business and the risk of the mandate.
Exec Capital puts an SME interim (up to £10m revenue) at £600–£1,000 a day and a mid-market one (£10m–£50m) at £900–£1,500.
A PE-backed or turnaround mandate pays £1,200–£2,000, reflecting what Exec Capital calls the intensity, pace and accountability of the work.
An interim MD of a group subsidiary or division sits at £800–£1,400 a day, depending on the scale of the business unit.
For the top seat, Exec Capital puts an interim CEO at £1,000–£1,800 a day in SME and mid-market roles; see interim CEO salary for the full chief executive bands.
Robert Walters, a recruiter, publishes one regional figure: £750–£1,450 a day for an MD on a PAYE contract in manufacturing and engineering in the North, with a mean of £1,100 across the roles it saw advertised.
09/ the year
An interim MD’s pay, annualised
No interim is paid a salary, but the comparison is often asked for.
Multiply the day rate by the days worked.
At Exec Capital’s mid-market band of £900–£1,500 a day, 220 days would bill £198,000–£330,000.
At the IIM’s all-function average of 148 days billed in a year, the same band bills £133,200–£222,000.
Both are our arithmetic, a comparison and not a salary.
A full month of interim cover, at about 22 working days, comes to £19,800–£33,000 on the mid-market band (our arithmetic).
That is the client’s cost.
The interim pays their own pension, holidays, insurance and the gaps between assignments out of it.
For scale, Exec Capital puts a permanent mid-market MD at £130,000–£280,000 in base salary, before bonus, pension and employer’s National Insurance.
See managing director salary for the permanent benchmarks in full.
10/ the other routes
Interim, permanent or fractional: which pay basis fits
Interim cover buys a full-time MD for a fixed period.
A permanent hire is paid a salary and package; see managing director salary.
If the work fits into part of the week, a fractional MD on a day rate may cost less over the same months; see fractional managing director salary.
