Fractional MD · Managing director, part of the week
Fractional managing director · what one does, what one costs, when you need one
A fractional managing director is an experienced MD who runs a business, or one part of it, for an agreed part of the week, on an ongoing basis. They set the plan, lead the management team, own the numbers and answer to the owners or the board, without a full-time appointment. Most work with owner-managed businesses and with the UK arms of larger groups.
This page explains the role: the week, the cost, and how a fractional MD compares with a fractional CEO, an interim MD or a permanent hire. Managing director roles sit with chief executive roles on our board: browse fractional CEO jobs for both titles. We recruit fractional, interim, part-time, temporary and permanent executives.

How fractional recruitment agencies compare is set out in one place, including how we work: a MD brief and a shortlist of three to five.
01/ the role
What is a fractional managing director?
A fractional managing director holds the MD seat for part of the week, on an ongoing basis. “Fractional” describes the days, not the seniority. The Institute of Directors describes the managing director as the executive responsible for the company’s performance, as dictated by the board’s strategy: preparing the corporate and annual plans, running the budget, leading the staff and keeping the board informed. A fractional MD does that job in fewer days, with a strong team doing the daily running.
Where a fractional MD fits
Three settings come up most. An owner-managed business whose founder wants to step back from running it day to day but is not ready to sell or hire full-time. A subsidiary, or the UK company of an overseas group, that needs a local leader but not five days of one. And a business between stages, where a full-time MD is the plan for later. For the permanent seat, see managing director.
Still a director
A fractional MD is often appointed to the board, and the law looks at the job, not the days: under the Companies Act, “director” includes any person occupying the position of director, by whatever name called. The duties in Companies House’s guidance on being a company director apply in full on the days they are not in the office too.
02/ scope
What a fractional MD does, week to week
The first month
A review of where the business stands: cash, margins, the customers that matter, the management team and the decisions waiting on the owner. The output is a written plan for the year the owners or the board can agree, with what the MD will own and what the team will run.
A typical week
The management meeting, a review of the numbers against the plan, time with the people who report to the MD, the largest customers and the bank, and the decisions nobody else can take. Days are agreed in the contract and change with the work: more during a hard quarter or a sale, fewer when the plan is running.
The team does the daily running
A fractional MD works only if someone runs operations on the other days: a strong operations lead, a finance director, or a fractional COO alongside. The MD keeps an eye on the warning signs as well as the plan; the Insolvency Service’s company health check sets out the cash flow and balance sheet tests every director should know.

05/ what it costs
What a fractional MD costs the day rate, and the permanent comparison
A fractional MD is paid a day rate or a monthly retainer for an agreed number of days, so the cost is the rate times the days. No source we can verify publishes a fractional managing director day rate today, so we print none. The rate moves with the size and complexity of the business, how much change the plan needs, and how many days a week it takes. We set out each candidate’s day rate on the shortlist.
Against a permanent hire, Exec Capital, a recruiter, puts a managing director’s base salary at £130,000 to £280,000 for mid-market businesses with £20m to £200m of revenue, before bonus and employer costs. More on permanent pay: managing director salary. Our rate calculator turns a day rate and days a week into a monthly figure.
06/ md vs ceo
Fractional managing director vs fractional CEO mostly a question of title
The Institute of Directors says the roles of managing director and chief executive are virtually the same. So fractional managing director vs fractional CEO is mostly about where the title is used: managing director in owner-managed businesses, subsidiaries and divisions; chief executive in investor-backed and larger companies. A fractional CEO and a fractional MD do much the same job; use the title your owners, staff and lenders already use.
The reporting line is the real difference. A fractional MD of a subsidiary answers to a group CEO or a parent board and works within group policies. A fractional MD of an owner-managed business usually answers to the owner, who may still sit on the board. Write that into the brief.
A fractional COO is a different hire: they run operations under an MD or CEO, rather than lead the business. If the need is full-time for a period, look at an interim managing director instead.
07/ when
When to hire a fractional managing director the usual triggers
Companies usually look at when to hire a fractional managing director when the business needs an experienced leader but cannot fill, or fund, a full-time week. The common triggers:
An owner stepping back. The founder wants to move from running the business to owning it, without selling or hiring a full-time MD yet.
A subsidiary or UK arm. A group needs a local leader and statutory director for a smaller business.
A plan that needs a leader. A growth plan, a new market or a refinancing that the current team cannot lead alone.
A bridge to a permanent MD. A business that will hire full-time later and needs the seat held well until then.
If the business needs a leader every day for a period, an interim MD fits better. When the work fills the week, most companies move to a permanent MD, sometimes the same person; we recruit that permanent hire too. See managing director jobs.
08/ hiring
How to hire one the short version
Write down what the MD must deliver in the next twelve months, who they report to, what they can decide alone and how many days that takes. Ask candidates for a business of similar size they ran, and take references from the owners or boards they reported to. The IoD’s Chartered Director programme is one recognised qualification for the board side of the role; experience of running a business matters more.
Settle the contract before the start. Where the MD works through their own company, the off-payroll working rules (IR35) may apply, and a statutory directorship needs particular care; status depends on how the engagement runs in practice, and a medium or large client makes the determination (HMRC’s guidance for clients sets out the size tests). Our IR35 guide explains the tests.
To hire a fractional MD through us, send the brief through the fractional CEO jobs page with the title managing director. We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate or pay, availability and IR35 position set out, after our five-stage vetting.
