Fractional managing director salary · day rate, month, year
What a fractional managing director earns, by the day, the month and the year
A fractional managing director salary is a day rate, not a salary.
Exec Capital, a recruiter, puts a fractional MD at £800–£2,500 a day: £800–£1,400 at an SME or growth-stage business, £1,200–£2,000 at a PE-backed or scaling one and £1,500–£2,500 on a turnaround or exit.
At two days a week, it puts the monthly cost at £6,400–£20,000.
What a fractional MD earns over a year depends on the days sold across clients, not the rate alone.
When you hire a fractional managing director through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Fractional recruitment works differently from a permanent search — shorter, scoped by days a week, and priced on the engagement. Send a Fractional Managing Director brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five vetted candidates.
01/ the role
How a fractional managing director is paid, and what sets the rate
A fractional managing director works set days a week for a business that needs MD-level leadership but not a full-time executive.
Exec Capital says a fractional MD typically works one to three days a week on an ongoing basis.
The client pays a day rate, or a fixed monthly fee for an agreed number of days.
There is no salary, bonus or employer pension.
Exec Capital says the rate depends on the MD’s sector background, the complexity of the brief, the size of the business, and whether the role carries full board-level accountability or a narrower operational remit.
Its 2026 table puts an SME or growth-stage engagement at £800–£1,400 a day, a PE-backed or scaling business at £1,200–£2,000 and a turnaround or exit at £1,500–£2,500.
An MD can also be employed part-time on a salary.
A part-time employee must not be treated less favourably than a comparable full-time one, with some benefits applied pro rata (GOV.UK).
That is a different arrangement from a fractional engagement, which is a contract for days.
02/ scope
How to hire a fractional managing director
1. Count the days the work needs
List what the MD must own: the management team, the plan, the numbers, the key customers, a sale or an investment round.
Then estimate the days a month it takes.
The days set the fee; the work sets the seniority.
The IoD’s factsheet on the role of the managing director is a useful checklist of what the seat covers.
2. Match seniority to the mandate
A growing owner-managed business does not need an exit record.
A turnaround or a sale does, and Exec Capital’s top band (£1,500–£2,500 a day) is for that work.
Pay for the experience the next year needs.
3. Agree scope, authority and rhythm
Write down which days, which meetings and which decisions the MD will own, and how they work beside the owner.
A monthly fee works when both sides know what it buys.
If the MD joins the board as a statutory director, they take on the duty to promote the success of the company under the Companies Act 2006 and the directors’ responsibilities GOV.UK sets out, however few days they work.
What we do on a fractional brief
We recruit fractional, interim, part-time, temporary and permanent executives, and non-executive directors.
We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.
Fractional chief executive roles on the board are on fractional CEO jobs.
03/ the week
How a week divides.
Part of a week is the point of the model: the days you buy are yours, the rest of the week goes to other clients. Move the days a week and the week redraws.
Illustration only: one way a fractional managing director’s week can divide at 2 days a week for you. Each block is half a day.

05/ the route
Fractional, interim or permanent?
Four taps. The answer names the route for the seat and the page that covers it.
The route · Fractional
A fractional managing director. The work fills part of the week, so buy the days it needs.
A fractional managing director holds the seat on agreed days for as long as the seat is needed, and works for other clients on the rest.
The route · Interim
An interim managing director. The work fills the week, and it has an end: a programme, a cover, a transaction.
An interim managing director takes the seat full time for that stretch and hands it over when it is done.
The route · Interim, then permanent
Interim now, a permanent managing director after. The seat is full time and long term, and the need is now.
An interim managing director holds it while the permanent search runs, so the seat is not left empty.
The route · Permanent
A permanent managing director.A full-time seat that sits at the table for years is a permanent hire.
There is time to run a search, so run one.
06/ rates by stage

Day rates as Exec Capital, a recruiter, publishes them, from its UK market data as at Q1 2026. They are its published ranges, not survey data.
07/ rates by commitment
Fractional MD rates by the month and the year
Exec Capital’s monthly cost at two days a week. The annual column is the monthly cost × 12: our arithmetic, a comparison and not a salary.
08/ economics
Rate is not income: what a fractional MD keeps
The day rate is what the client pays, not what the MD takes home.
Most fractional executives invoice through their own limited company and take money out as a salary through PAYE and as dividends from profit, after Corporation Tax.
Out of the same income they fund their pension, holidays, insurance and the days they do not sell.
Tax status changes the number too.
Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the MD’s own company decides.
The rules apply contract by contract, so a fractional MD with two clients can have two different answers.
HMRC’s CEST tool gives its view on one engagement; our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

10/ fractional md day rate
Fractional MD day rate, and what it adds up to
The fractional MD day rate is the starting point, not the income.
At Exec Capital’s SME band of £800–£1,400, each day a week sold for 52 weeks bills £41,600–£72,800 (our arithmetic, before any weeks off).
Two clients at one day a week each is twice that; a full week across several clients is five times it, if the diary fills.
In practice the diary rarely fills every week.
Holidays, the gaps between clients and the time spent finding the next one all come off the total.
A fractional MD’s annual pay is the profit of a small business, not a rate multiplied by a full year.
To model your own position, start from the days you can realistically sell and use the rate calculator.
11/ the comparison
Salary, day rate or monthly fee: comparing like with like
Exec Capital compares a fractional MD with a permanent one on £100,000–£250,000 base salary, plus employer’s National Insurance, benefits, pension, bonus and often equity.
It says two days a week costs roughly 20–35% of the equivalent full-time hire.
That is a recruiter’s estimate; check it against your own figures.
A permanent MD is paid a salary and package; see managing director salary.
An interim MD is paid by the day for full-time cover over a fixed period; see interim managing director salary.
For the top seat on the same basis, see fractional CEO salary.
