Interim HR director salary · day rates, 2026
What an interim HR director earns, by the day and by the assignment
An interim HR director is paid a day rate, not a salary.
Robert Walters’ 2026 survey puts a contract HR director in London at £700–£1,200 a day on PAYE, with an average of £1,000.
Exec Capital, a search firm, publishes £500–£800 a day at an SME and £700–£1,200 in the mid-market, rising to £900–£1,600 for a PE-backed or complex mandate.
The rate covers full-time work for a fixed period, with no salary, pension or paid holiday behind it.
When you hire an interim HR director through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

01/ the role
How an interim HR director is paid, and why the unit is the day
An interim HR director holds the people seat full-time for a defined period: a departure, a restructure, a redundancy programme, an acquisition or the build-up of a new function.
The interim is paid for the days worked, either through their own company or on a payroll.
That makes the day rate the real unit of pay.
There is no salary, no employer pension and no paid holiday, and the interim carries the gaps between assignments.
Across all functions, the Institute of Interim Management’s 2026 survey puts the average assignment at 10.0 months, the average gap between assignments at 3.2 months and the average days billed in a year at 148.
Robert Walters quotes its contract figures as PAYE day rates, paid through a payroll.
An interim who works through their own company instead invoices the business and pays themselves through salary and dividends from what the company earns, after its costs and Corporation Tax.
Either way, the day rate is not take-home pay.
02/ scope
How to hire an interim HR director
1. Define the mandate and its end
Say what the interim must deliver and by when: a consultation completed, a function rebuilt, a handover to a permanent hire.
Exec Capital prices a redundancy or restructuring specialist at £800–£1,400 a day, against £500–£800 for SME cover, so the mandate sets the rate.
2. Decide IR35 status at the start
If your business is medium or large, you make the status determination for the engagement and give the interim your reasons.
Settle it before you go to market, because it changes the rate candidates quote.
3. Match the record to the mandate
Ask for outcomes from comparable assignments.
A business making 20 or more people redundant within 90 days at one establishment must follow collective consultation rules; a sale or acquisition may bring staff across under TUPE.
Acas sets out how to manage a redundancy process and what both employers must do in a TUPE transfer, and its Code of Practice on disciplinary and grievance procedures is the minimum an employer should follow, and a tribunal takes it into account.
Hire someone who has run the process you face, and use the CIPD’s Profession Map, the standard for the people profession, to test the rest of the record.

What we do on an interim brief
We recruit interim, fractional, part-time, temporary and permanent HR leaders, and non-executive directors.
We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.
If the seat needs a permanent owner after the interim, read how HR director recruitment runs.

04/ the route
Fractional, interim or permanent?
Four taps. The answer names the route for the seat and the page that covers it.
The route · Fractional
A fractional HR director. The work fills part of the week, so buy the days it needs.
A fractional HR director holds the seat on agreed days for as long as the seat is needed, and works for other clients on the rest.
The route · Interim
An interim HR director. The work fills the week, and it has an end: a programme, a cover, a transaction.
An interim HR director takes the seat full time for that stretch and hands it over when it is done.
The route · Interim, then permanent
Interim now, a permanent HR director after. The seat is full time and long term, and the need is now.
An interim HR director holds it while the permanent search runs, so the seat is not left empty.
The route · Permanent
A permanent HR director.A full-time seat that sits at the table for years is a permanent hire.
There is time to run a search, so run one.
05/ rates by stage
Interim HR director salary day rates by mandate and region
Day rates as each publisher states them, all 2026. Robert Walters’ figures are PAYE contract rates from its survey of advertised roles, with its average. Exec Capital publishes two sets of bands on two pages; each is labelled by page. Robert Walters and Exec Capital are recruiters. The IIM figures cover every interim function, not HR alone.
06/ economics
Interim pay and IR35: who decides, and what it changes
Tax status turns on how the engagement runs, not on the title or the contract alone.
Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the interim’s own company decides.
The rules apply contract by contract, so one interim can have engagements on both sides.
It shows in the rates.
The IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average interim day rate at £949 outside IR35 and £830 inside, across all functions.
HMRC’s CEST tool gives its view on a specific engagement.
Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

08/ interim hr director day rate
Interim HR director day rate by mandate and region
The interim HR director day rate rises with the size of the business and the risk of the mandate.
Exec Capital’s interim page puts an SME (up to 200 employees) at £500–£800 a day and a mid-market business (200–1,000 employees) at £700–£1,200.
A redundancy or restructuring specialist commands £800–£1,400, and a PE-backed or complex mandate £900–£1,600.
Exec Capital’s HR salary guide gives narrower bands: £500–£750 a day for steady-state cover through a permanent hire at mid-market scale, and £750–£1,100 for a transformation brief.
Ask which basis a quote is on.
Place matters too.
Robert Walters’ PAYE contract rates for an HR director average £1,000 a day in London, £814 in the South, £810 in the North and £750 in the Midlands.
09/ interim human resources director salary
Interim human resources director salary, annualised
An interim human resources director salary is a figure people search for, but no interim is paid one.
To compare, multiply the day rate by the days worked.
At Robert Walters’ London average of £1,000 a day, 220 days would bill £220,000.
At the IIM’s all-function average of 148 days billed in a year, the same rate bills £148,000.
Both are our arithmetic, a comparison and not a salary.
A full month of interim cover, at about 22 working days and £1,000 a day, comes to £22,000 (our arithmetic).
That is the client’s cost.
The interim pays their own pension, holidays, insurance and the gaps between assignments out of it.
For scale, Robert Half’s 2026 median for a permanent HR director is £110,250 in base salary, before bonus, pension and employer’s National Insurance.
