Interim HR director jobs · hire an interim HR director for the restructure, the deal or the gap
Interim HR director jobs are full-time HR leadership roles on a fixed term: a senior HR leader who runs the function through a restructure, a TUPE transfer, an acquisition, a serious employee-relations case or a vacancy, then hands over. To hire an interim HR director, name the programme, the dates and who signs off, then look for someone who has run the same thing before.
We recruit interim, fractional, part-time, temporary and permanent HR leaders. On every brief we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, after five-stage vetting. Looking for work? Live interim HR leadership roles are on the board below.

01/ the role
Interim HR director jobs: when companies hire one
An interim HR director takes the HR seat full-time for a fixed term. It is a leadership role with authority over the function, not a project consultant and not an HR manager covering day-to-day processes. Companies usually hire one when an event arrives that carries legal risk and a deadline.
Restructures and redundancies
Where an employer proposes redundancies at or above the statutory threshold at one establishment within the statutory period, Acas explains that it must hold collective consultation with a recognised trade union or elected employee representatives, and that staggering redundancies to avoid consultation can lead to a protective award. The employer must also notify the government in advance on the HR1 form; failing to do so without good cause can mean prosecution and a fine for the company and its officers. An interim HR director owns the plan, the consultation timetable and the records.
TUPE transfers, mergers and acquisitions
When a business or a service changes hands, employees may be protected by TUPE: their jobs and terms usually transfer and continuity of employment is kept. Acas advises both the old and the new employer to make a transfer plan, keep affected employees informed and consider due diligence information, and by law both must inform and consult staff representatives. After the deal comes harmonisation: two sets of terms, two handbooks, two HR systems.
Employee-relations cases and vacancies
A grievance against a senior leader, a run of tribunal claims or a collective dispute needs someone senior and independent of the history. The Acas Code of Practice on disciplinary and grievance procedures is the minimum an employer should follow, and a tribunal will look at the procedure used. The simplest trigger is a vacancy: the HR director has left and the permanent search will take time.
02/ scope
How to hire an interim HR director
1. Name the programme and the end date
Write down what has to be delivered (the consultation, the transfer, the integration, cover to a named date), what the interim can decide alone, and who they report to. An interim with no end state tends to drift into a permanent role nobody chose.
2. Choose interim, fractional or permanent
Interim when the work is full-time and time-bound. Fractional when you need senior HR judgement for part of the week over a longer period: see fractional HR director roles. Permanent when running the function is a lasting full-time job. If the seat is board-level people strategy, hire an interim CHRO; for a permanent board appointment, see CHRO recruitment.
3. Test for the same programme, run before
Ask for the restructure, transfer or integration they ran most recently: the timetable, the consultation, what went wrong and how they fixed it. Take references from the chief executive and, where there was one, the employment lawyer. CIPD membership levels give a quick check on standing: Chartered Member (Chartered MCIPD) for strategic and operational expertise, Chartered Fellow (Chartered FCIPD) for people influencing at senior levels.
4. Settle IR35 before the start date
Most interim HR directors work through their own company. Decide the status before they start (see below), and build a handover to the permanent HR director into the contract.
What we do on an interim HR brief
We send a shortlist of 3–5 candidates, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out. Every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

05/ interim head of hr
Interim head of HR: the same brief, one level down
An interim head of HR runs the HR function day to day for a fixed term: the casework, the policies, the HR system and the first call for managers. In many businesses the head of HR reports to the CEO, COO or finance lead and delivers the function, while an HR director sits on the leadership team and is accountable for it. At a smaller company the two titles often describe the same job.
Hire an interim head of HR when the programme is operational: cover through a vacancy, a policy overhaul, an HR system rollout, or a run of casework that has outgrown the team. Choose an interim HR director when the decisions also need leadership authority: a restructure, a transfer, an integration.
Either way, brief the work, not the title. Our shortlist sets out each candidate’s day rate, availability and IR35 position, so an interim head of HR and an interim HR director can be compared on the same page.
06/ day rates
Interim HR director day rates and what the published figures say
We have not found a verified published day rate for an interim HR director that we can cite, so we do not quote one; every candidate on a shortlist states their own. Two published benchmarks sit either side of the seat. For a permanent HR director, Robert Half’s 2026 HR salary guide gives £92,000 (25th percentile) to £128,750 (75th), median £110,250. For the CHRO-level seat, the Robert Walters Salary Survey 2026 gives a London contract rate for a Chief People Officer of £900 to £1,500 a day.
The total cost of an interim is the day rate times the days worked. Compare it with the cost of the risk the interim is there to manage, and with the time a permanent search will take.
07/ ir35
IR35 for interim HR directors
Where an interim HR director provides services through their own company, the off-payroll working rules (IR35) may apply. In most cases the client decides the worker’s status; for a small client outside the public sector, the worker’s own company decides. HMRC sets out the size tests in its guidance for clients.
Status turns on how the engagement runs in practice, not on the contract’s label. An interim who runs the HR function full-time, manages the team and answers to the chief executive needs the contract and the working reality looked at together. Our IR35 guide sets out the tests, and we set out each candidate’s IR35 position on the shortlist without promising an outcome.
