What an interim CHRO earns, by the day and by the mandate
An interim CHRO is paid a day rate, not a salary.
Exec Capital’s 2026 HR guide puts the interim CHRO salary at £1,100 to £1,800 a day at large corporate and listed level.
For an interim chief people officer covering a gap or leading a transformation, Exec Capital publishes £750 to £1,400 a day.
Across every discipline, the Institute of Interim Management’s 2026 survey puts the average interim day rate at £907, and £1,004 in the private sector.
When you hire an interim CHRO through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Fractional recruitment works differently from a permanent search — shorter, scoped by days a week, and priced on the engagement. Send a Interim CHRO brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five vetted candidates.
01/ the role
What an interim CHRO does, and what sets the rate
An interim CHRO takes the whole people seat, usually full-time, for a fixed term.
The usual reasons are a departure that leaves the seat empty, a restructuring, a merger or acquisition, or a culture change that needs a senior owner now.
The interim leaves when the change is done or a permanent hire starts.
Scale and complexity set the rate.
Exec Capital’s HR guide separates steady-state cover from transformation work: an interim HR director runs at £500–£750 a day holding the function steady in a mid-market business, and £750–£1,100 on a transformation brief.
At large corporate and listed level, the interim CHRO rate is £1,100–£1,800 a day.
Specialist law adds to the rate.
Exec Capital says employment law expertise and TUPE experience command a premium where the mandate needs them.
Under TUPE, when a business changes owner its employees’ jobs, terms and conditions and continuity of employment usually transfer with it.
Across all disciplines the IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average assignment at 10.0 months.
That is not a CHRO figure, but it is a fair guide to how long a change mandate runs.
02/ scope
How a day rate differs from a salary
No package on top
A day rate usually carries no bonus, no employer pension, no paid holiday and no notice period.
The interim funds those themselves, along with the gaps between assignments.
The IIM’s survey puts the average gap at 3.2 months.
Days billed, not days in the year
The annual figures below multiply a day rate by 220 working days.
That is our arithmetic and a ceiling, not an income: the IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average interim’s billed days at 148 in the year.
Tax status decides the take-home
Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), status is decided by how the engagement runs.
A medium or large client makes the determination and issues a status determination statement; for a small client outside the public sector, the interim’s own company decides.
HMRC’s CEST tool gives its view on a specific engagement.
The IIM puts the average rate outside IR35 at £949 a day and inside at £830.

04/ rates by stage
Interim CHRO day rate by mandate
Published day rates from Exec Capital, a search firm (2026 HR guide and chief people officer page), and the Institute of Interim Management’s 2026 survey of interim managers. The annual column is the day rate × 220 working days: our arithmetic, for comparison only, not a salary.
05/ economics
What an interim costs you
The cost is the day rate times the days worked.
There is no salary to carry after the term ends, and no bonus or pension to fund on top.
If the engagement falls inside IR35, the deemed employer deducts Income Tax and employee National Insurance from the fees and pays employer’s National Insurance to HMRC (GOV.UK).
For 2026 to 2027 that is 15% on earnings above £5,000 a year (HMRC rates and thresholds).
Budget for it before you agree the rate.
We set out each candidate’s day rate and IR35 position on the shortlist, so the cost is clear before the first interview.

07/ interim chief people officer salary
Interim chief people officer salary
Exec Capital publishes the interim chief people officer salary as a day rate of £750 to £1,400, for transformation work or cover in technology and growth businesses.
It describes the interim as the answer to an unexpected departure, a people transformation, a culture change, or the people side of a fundraising or merger.
An interim chief human resources officer in a large corporate or listed business sits higher, at £1,100 to £1,800 a day on the same publisher’s HR guide.
The titles describe one seat; the setting moves the rate.
08/ interim chro day rate
Interim CHRO day rate: what moves it
Three things move the interim CHRO day rate: the size of the business, whether the brief is cover or change, and the law involved.
On Exec Capital’s figures, the same seat runs from £500 a day for steady-state HR director cover in the mid-market to £1,800 a day for a CHRO at a listed company.
Sector moves it too.
The IIM survey puts the private-sector average for all interims at £1,004 a day, against £700 in the public sector and £728 in the third sector.
The Institute of Interim Management is the membership body for interim managers.
09/ interim chro salary
Interim CHRO salary against permanent and fractional pay
An interim CHRO at £1,100 a day comes to £242,000 over 220 days (our arithmetic).
Robert Half’s 2026 national median for a permanent CHRO is £147,000 in base salary.
The two do not compare one for one: the interim carries no bonus, pension, holiday or notice, funds the gaps between assignments, and bills fewer days than 220 in most years.
For permanent pay in full, see CHRO salary.
For a people leader on part of the week, see fractional CHRO salary.
