Full-time Operations Manager — the balanced verdict

Why this role stands out

  • Established, credible employer with strong culture and benefits (pension, health, WFA, parental leave)
  • Hands-on scope combining strategic direction with day-to-day test execution and optimisation
  • Clear cross-functional remit with direct influence on revenue, LTV and marketing ROI
  • One report provided; structured experimentation roadmap ownership

Worth checking before you apply

  • Full-time commitment expected; no flexibility signals for fractional or portfolio approaches
  • Hybrid with 3+ days office minimum; not remote-friendly for someone seeking location flexibility
  • Salary not disclosed in posting; typical UK operations head roles in media range £60–£90k, but Economist may pay premium

The Economist is looking for a commercially minded, highly analytical Head of Marketing Operations and Conversion Optimisation to help accelerate acquisition, retention and customer lifetime value.

This is a hands-on role for someone who combines rigorous problem-solving with strong operational judgement. You will own the conversion-rate optimisation and experimentation agenda across the customer journey: identifying opportunities, shaping hypotheses, prioritising tests, coordinating execution and turning results into action.

You will work closely with Product, Trading, Data, Research, Retention, Finance and Marketing leaders to improve the effectiveness of our marketing investment, optimise key customer touchpoints and develop high-impact commercial initiatives.

This role has one direct report to support in executing and measuring business-critical optimisation tests.

What you’ll do

Lead the conversion-rate optimisation strategy across acquisition and retention journeys, improving conversion, media efficiency, customer lifetime value and total revenue.

Own and manage the experimentation roadmap, from idea generation and prioritisation through to execution, analysis and implementation.

Partner closely with Product and Engineering to ensure tests are well designed, delivered at pace and translated into scalable improvements.

Analyse customer behaviour and performance data to identify friction, opportunities and growth levers across the funnel.

Help optimise the customer journey to encourage take-up of higher-value, higher-LTV products.

Work cross-functionally with Data, Research, Retention, Finance, Legal, Product and Marketing to deliver high-impact initiatives.

Prepare clear, compelling materials and strategic recommendations for executive leadership, Board meetings and other internal reviews.

Bring discipline to marketing operations: establishing robust processes, clear prioritisation and a strong test-and-learn culture.

What you’ll bring

At least five years’ experience in a highly analytical, commercially focused role. Experience in digital marketing, subscriptions, e-commerce, media, product, consulting, strategy or operations is particularly relevant.

Demonstrable experience in conversion-rate optimisation, experimentation, digital journey optimisation or growth strategy.

Strong quantitative and financial-modelling skills, with the ability to turn complex data into clear commercial recommendations.

A track record of working effectively across Product, Data, Marketing and senior stakeholders.

Excellent judgement on where to focus effort, balancing strategic thinking with meticulous execution.

A creative, curious and structured approach to solving business problems, with a relentless focus on measurable results.

Strong communication and presentation skills, including the ability to make complex issues simple and persuasive for senior audiences.

Advanced Excel skills; experience with web analytics and visualisation tools such as Google Analytics, Tableau, Similarweb and Salesforce Marketing Cloud. SQL proficiency is a plus.

A bachelor’s degree is required; a postgraduate degree, such as an MBA, is desirable.
