Fractional chief data officer salary · pro-rata, our arithmetic
What a fractional chief data officer earns, pro-rata of the permanent salary
No independent UK source publishes a fractional chief data officer day rate.
The figures here are the permanent chief data officer salary from Robert Half spread across working days — our arithmetic, a pro-rata floor for comparison, not a market rate.
Robert Half’s 2026 national range runs from £88,250 to £132,500, median £110,250.
Over 220 working days, that median is about £500 a day.
So a fractional chief data officer salary should be read from the quotes you receive.
When you hire a fractional chief data officer through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Data leadership roles on the board
Fractional recruiting starts with the brief, not the CV pile. Send a Fractional Chief Data Officer brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five candidates, each through five-stage vetting.
01/ the role
How a fractional chief data officer is paid, and why we show arithmetic
A fractional chief data officer owns the data strategy for part of the week.
The government’s Digital and Data Profession Capability Framework lists the work: a data strategy aligned with the organisation’s objectives, data quality, ethical use and the data skills the organisation needs.
A fractional holder does that across one to three days a week, paid a day rate or a monthly retainer.
We looked for an independent published day rate for the seat and found none we could check.
The only candidate was one provider’s own price list, and a firm’s price for its own service is not a market rate.
We do not print it.
What we can print is the permanent salary, from a named source, divided across the working year.
That tells you what the same base pay comes to per day.
It is our arithmetic, and it leaves out everything an employer pays on top of salary.
Treat it as a floor for comparing quotes, not as the going rate.
A chief data officer is not the data protection officer.
The ICO’s guidance on data protection officers says a DPO must be independent, expert in data protection and report to the highest management level, and can be appointed externally.
If you need a DPO, brief that role separately.
02/ scope
How to hire a fractional chief data officer
1. Count the days the work needs
Write down what the role owns: the strategy, the platform choices, governance and quality, the analytics team.
Estimate the days a month it takes.
A strategy and a governance framework may need two days a week; running a platform build needs more.
2. Compare the quotes, line by line
Ask each candidate for a day rate, the days a week, and the notice either side can give.
Set each quote beside the pro-rata figures on this page.
Check the record as well as the rate: BCS runs the Chartered IT Professional (CITP) register for technology professionals.
3. Settle status, VAT and what is not included
Decide IR35 status before you go to market (see below).
If the person is registered for VAT, VAT is added to the invoice.
A day rate carries no holiday pay and no workplace pension contribution from you.
What we do on a fractional brief
We recruit fractional, interim, part-time, temporary and permanent data and technology leaders, and non-executive directors.
We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

03/ the week
How a week divides.
Part of a week is the point of the model: the days you buy are yours, the rest of the week goes to other clients. Move the days a week and the week redraws.
Illustration only: one way a fractional chief data officer’s week can divide at 2 days a week for you. Each block is half a day.

05/ the route
Fractional, interim or permanent?
Four taps. The answer names the route for the seat and the page that covers it.
The route · Fractional
A fractional chief data officer. The work fills part of the week, so buy the days it needs.
A fractional chief data officer holds the seat on agreed days for as long as the seat is needed, and works for other clients on the rest.
The route · Interim
An interim chief data officer. The work fills the week, and it has an end: a programme, a cover, a transaction.
An interim chief data officer takes the seat full time for that stretch and hands it over when it is done.
The route · Interim, then permanent
Interim now, a permanent chief data officer after. The seat is full time and long term, and the need is now.
An interim chief data officer holds it while the permanent search runs, so the seat is not left empty.
The route · Permanent
A permanent chief data officer.A full-time seat that sits at the table for years is a permanent hire.
There is time to run a search, so run one.
06/ rates by stage
Fractional chief data officer salary the permanent salary, pro-rata
Our arithmetic, not a market rate. The permanent base is Robert Half’s 2026 starting-salary projection, as /chief-data-officer-salary quotes it. Day equivalent = base ÷ 220 working days, rounded to the nearest £10. Each year column = that rounded day × 46 weeks × the days a week. 220 days and 46 weeks are our assumptions.
07/ economics
What the arithmetic leaves out, and who decides IR35
A permanent salary comes with paid holiday, employer’s National Insurance and an employer pension contribution.
A fractional executive who is self-employed gets none of those from the client and funds them from the fee.
That is why the pro-rata figure is a floor for comparison and not a rate.
Tax status turns on how the engagement runs, not on its label.
Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small private-sector client, the executive’s own company decides.
The rules apply contract by contract.
HMRC’s CEST tool gives its view on one engagement, and our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

09/ what to check
What to check in a fractional quote before you agree it
Ask for three things in writing: the day rate, the days a week or month, and the notice period.
Ask whether the rate changes if the days change.
Ask what happens to days not used in a month.
Check what the quote includes.
VAT is added if the person is VAT-registered.
There is no pension or benefits package inside a day rate.
If you would rather employ someone part-time on a salary, part-time workers’ rights apply and some benefits are given pro rata.
Robert Half’s figures are starting-salary projections for base pay.
A permanent package adds bonus and benefits on top, so a fractional quote is not comparable to base alone.
