Interim finance manager salary · day rates, 2026
What an interim finance manager earns, by the day and by the assignment
An interim finance manager is paid a day rate, not a salary.
Contract job ads tracked by IT Jobs Watch over the six months to 5 October 2026 quoted a median of £550 a day, with the range running from £513 to £675.
Morgan McKinley’s 2026 contract bands put a finance manager at a London SME on £280–£450+ a day, and one in London banking on £350–£700.
The rate covers full-time work for a fixed period, with no salary, pension or paid holiday behind it.
When you hire an interim finance manager through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Fractional recruitment works differently from a permanent search — shorter, scoped by days a week, and priced on the engagement. Send a Interim finance manager brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five vetted candidates.
01/ the role
How an interim finance manager is paid, and why the unit is the day
An interim finance manager runs the monthly numbers full-time for a defined period: cover for a departure or parental leave, a systems change, a backlog to clear, or a bridge while a permanent search runs.
The interim invoices the business for the days worked, usually through their own company or an agency.
That makes the day rate the real unit of pay.
There is no salary, no employer pension and no paid holiday, and the interim carries the gaps between assignments.
Across all functions, the Institute of Interim Management’s 2026 survey puts the average assignment at 10.0 months, the average gap between assignments at 3.2 months and the average days billed in a year at 148.
An interim who works through their own company pays themselves through salary and dividends from what the company earns, after its costs and Corporation Tax.
The day rate is the company’s income, not the interim’s take-home pay.
02/ scope
How to hire an interim finance manager
1. Define the work and its end
Say what the interim must deliver and by when: month-ends closed on time, the balance sheet reconciled, VAT returns filed, a new system live, a handover to a permanent hire.
A defined end date is what makes interim the right route.
2. Decide IR35 status at the start
If your business is medium or large, you make the status determination for the engagement and give the interim your reasons.
Settle it before you go to market, because it changes the rate candidates quote.
3. Match the record to the systems
Ask which ledgers and ERP systems the interim has run a close on.
Contract job ads tracked by IT Jobs Watch most often named stakeholder management, ERP and Oracle alongside the title.
What we do on an interim brief
We recruit interim, fractional, part-time, temporary and permanent finance people, and non-executive directors.
We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.
If the seat must also own the controls and the audit, see interim financial controller.

04/ rates by stage
Interim finance manager salary day rates by sector, place and source
Day rates as each publisher states them. IT Jobs Watch reports advertised contract rates from job ads in its IT-market sample over the six months to 5 October 2026: what employers advertised, not what was paid. Morgan McKinley, a recruiter, publishes 2026 contract daily rates under three headings, 0–3, 3–5 and 5+ years. The IIM figures cover every interim function, not finance managers alone.
05/ economics
Interim pay and IR35: who decides, and what it changes
Tax status turns on how the engagement runs, not on the title or the contract alone.
Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the interim’s own company decides.
The rules apply contract by contract, so one interim can have engagements on both sides.
It shows in the rates.
The IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average interim day rate at £949 outside IR35 and £830 inside, across all functions.
HMRC’s CEST tool gives its view on a specific engagement.
Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

07/ interim finance manager day rate
Interim finance manager day rate by place and sector
The interim finance manager day rate in job ads tracked by IT Jobs Watch had a median of £550 over the six months to 5 October 2026, down from £675 in the same period of 2025.
The London median was £650 and the median outside London £525.
IT Jobs Watch tracks the IT jobs market, so its sample leans to finance managers on systems work: ERP and Oracle were among the skills most often named in those ads.
Read it as what employers advertised for that kind of seat.
Morgan McKinley’s 2026 contract bands are lower for most of the market.
At a London SME it gives £280–£350 a day in its 0–3 years band and £400–£450+ in its 5+ years band; in the South West and the Northern Home Counties its bands run from £300 to £450.
London banking pays most, at £550–£700 a day in the 5+ years band.
08/ the year
Interim finance manager pay, annualised
No interim is paid a salary, but the comparison is useful.
At the £550 advertised median, 220 days would bill £121,000.
At the IIM’s all-function average of 148 days billed in a year, the same rate bills £81,400.
Both are our arithmetic, a comparison and not a salary.
A full month of interim cover, at about 22 working days and £550 a day, comes to £12,100 (our arithmetic).
That is the client’s cost.
The interim pays their own pension, holidays, insurance and the gaps between assignments out of it.
For scale, Robert Half’s 2026 median for a permanent finance manager is £59,500 in base salary, before pension and employer’s National Insurance.
See finance manager salary for the permanent benchmarks in full, or fractional finance manager salary if the work fits into part of the week.
