Interim CRO salary 2026 · day rates by mandate

What an interim CRO earns, by the day and by the assignment

An interim CRO salary is really a day rate.

Exec Capital publishes £900–£1,500 a day for an interim chief revenue officer at a scale-up of up to £30m revenue, £1,200–£2,000 at mid-market and PE-backed firms, and £1,800–£3,000+ on an enterprise or complex commercial model.

These are a search firm’s planning bands, not a survey.

Across every function, the Institute of Interim Management’s 2026 survey puts the average interim day rate at £907, and £1,004 in the private sector.

When you hire an interim CRO through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Roles on the board interim revenue leadership

Fractional recruiting starts with the brief, not the CV pile. Send a Interim CRO brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five candidates, each through five-stage vetting.

01/ the role

Why an interim CRO is paid by the day

An interim CRO is a senior revenue leader who works full time for a fixed term: to cover a vacancy, to run the revenue function through a permanent search, or to turn round a missed plan.

Exec Capital lists those as the common mandates, along with a go-to-market redesign and the first months of private equity ownership.

The interim is usually paid a day rate through their own company.

There is no salary, bonus scheme or pension from the client, and no pay for days not worked.

The rate has to cover their holidays, their pension and the gaps between assignments.

Those gaps are real.

The IIM’s 2026 survey finds interims billed 148 days a year on average, with an average gap of 3.2 months between assignments and an average assignment of 10.0 months.

These figures cover all functions, not CROs alone.

02/ scope

How to hire an interim CRO

1. Define the gap, not the title

Write down what the interim must hold together and what must change by the end: the forecast, the pipeline, the team, the sales and marketing hand-off.

Say when cover must start and how long you expect to need it.

2. Set the term and the days

Interim work is full time for a fixed term.

Agree the start, the end, the notice either side and the days a week.

If you need senior revenue leadership for part of the week instead, a fractional CRO is the better fit.

3. Check employment status before the start

Status for tax is decided by how the engagement runs.

Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the worker’s own company decides.

HMRC’s CEST tool gives HMRC’s view on a specific engagement.

4. Agree the rate against the mandate

Exec Capital’s bands rise with complexity: the same person may charge more for a PE-backed turnaround than for steady cover at a scale-up.

Agree what the rate covers, how expenses are handled and how days are recorded.

What we do on an interim brief

We recruit interim, fractional, permanent, part-time and temporary executives, and non-executive directors.

We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

04/ rates by stage

Interim CRO day rate by mandate, and what it annualises to

Day rates as Exec Capital publishes them for an interim chief revenue officer, with the IIM’s 2026 all-function averages for context. The two right-hand columns are our arithmetic, for comparison only: the rate × 148 days (the IIM’s average days billed in a year) and × 220 days (a full working year, which few interims bill). They are not salaries.

05/ economics

Day rate or salary: comparing like with like

An employee is paid for holidays: almost all workers are legally entitled to paid annual leave.

An employer also pays into a workplace pension under automatic enrolment (GOV.UK).

An interim working through their own company gets neither from the client, so the day rate carries both.

That is why the arithmetic in the table is a comparison, not a salary.

At the IIM’s average of 148 days billed, a mid-market interim CRO at £1,200–£2,000 a day grosses £177,600–£296,000 before their own costs, tax and the time between assignments.

For the permanent comparison, see CRO salary, which sets out base, variable pay and the employer’s costs on top.

Our rate calculator turns a day rate and days a week into a monthly figure.

07/ interim cro salary

Interim CRO salary: why the unit is the day

There is no interim CRO salary in the employment sense.

The client pays a day rate for the days worked, usually to the interim’s own company, for the length of the assignment.

Nothing is paid between assignments.

To compare it with a permanent package, multiply the day rate by the days you expect to use, then compare that with salary, variable pay and employer’s costs.

The IIM’s 148 billed days is a realistic year for an interim; 220 days is a full working year and a ceiling.

08/ interim cro day rate

Interim CRO day rate: what moves it

Exec Capital’s bands for the interim CRO day rate rise with the size and complexity of the business: £900–£1,500 at a scale-up of up to £30m revenue, £1,200–£2,000 at mid-market and PE-backed firms, and £1,800–£3,000+ on an enterprise or complex commercial model.

The page does not give a date beyond its 2026 heading.

The seat below costs less.

Exec Capital publishes interim sales director rates of £500–£900 a day at an SME of up to £20m revenue, £800–£1,400 at mid-market and PE-backed firms, and £1,200–£1,800 on an enterprise or complex commercial model.

If the gap is in running the sales team rather than the whole revenue function, an interim sales director may be enough.

For the whole market, the Institute of Interim Management runs an annual survey of its members.

Its 2026 average of £907 a day covers every discipline, so it shows where the CRO bands sit rather than setting them.

09/ interim chief revenue officer salary

Interim chief revenue officer salary and IR35

IR35 changes what an interim chief revenue officer salary is worth after tax, not the day rate on the contract.

The off-payroll working rules make sure a worker who would have been an employee pays broadly the same Income Tax and National Insurance as an employee would.

Who decides depends on the client.

In most cases a medium or large client determines the worker’s status; for a small client outside the public sector, the worker’s own company decides.

Status is decided by how the engagement runs in practice, not by the contract’s label.

It shows in the rates.

The IIM’s 2026 survey records an average of £949 a day for assignments outside IR35 and £830 inside, across all functions.

Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

10/ other routes

Interim against permanent and fractional pay

A permanent CRO is paid a salary plus variable pay and often equity; see CRO salary.

A fractional CRO works a few days a week on a day rate or retainer; see fractional CRO salary.

Choose interim when the seat is empty and continuity matters.

Choose fractional when you need senior revenue leadership on part of the week for longer.

Choose permanent when the business needs a revenue owner every day.

For the full comparison of routes, see interim CRO, and to start a permanent search, hire a CRO.

11/ questions

Interim CRO salary FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in an interim CRO.

An interim CRO is paid a day rate rather than a salary. Exec Capital publishes £900–£1,500 a day at a scale-up of up to £30m revenue, £1,200–£2,000 at mid-market and PE-backed firms, and £1,800–£3,000+ on an enterprise or complex commercial model.
Exec Capital’s bands run from £900 to £3,000+ a day, rising with the size and complexity of the business. Across all functions, the IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average interim day rate at £907, and £1,004 in the private sector (IIM).
It depends on days billed. At the IIM’s average of 148 days, a mid-market rate of £1,200–£2,000 a day comes to £177,600–£296,000 before the interim’s own costs and tax (our arithmetic). That is a comparison, not a salary: the interim funds holidays, pension and gaps between assignments.
The day rate times the days you use. At Exec Capital’s mid-market band of £1,200–£2,000 a day, a five-day week costs £6,000–£10,000 (our arithmetic). There is no bonus scheme or pension on top. We set out each candidate’s day rate on the shortlist.
Define the gap and what must change by the end, set the term and the days, check employment status for tax before the start, and agree the rate against the mandate. See interim CRO jobs.
There is no CRO-specific figure. Across all functions, the IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average assignment at 10.0 months (IIM).
It can. If the interim works through their own company and would have been an employee, the off-payroll working rules apply. A medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the interim’s company decides.
