How to hire

How to hire interim COOs, and the best places to look

Interim operating leaders are usually between assignments for weeks, not months. Have the brief ready before you search.

The best places to hire interim COOs are interim specialists, executive recruiters with an interim desk, and professional bodies for interim managers. Platforms list availability; check operating experience yourself.

For a remote interim COO, decide which sites and teams need them in person. Operations is rarely fully remote.

The working pattern

What changes when the COO is interim?

Interim COOs take the operating seat full-time for a defined transition. The assignment ends with systems, decisions and ownership handed on, not just a date.

The illustrative brief: an integration after an acquisition. Two operations must become one within a year. The existing operations director runs one site and has no capacity for the integration.

The appointment owns: The interim COO leads the integration plan and owns the combined operating decisions.

Another owner retains: The CEO keeps the permanent structure; site managers keep daily delivery.

The case is illustrative; it does not describe a Fractional Quest placement.

Assessment

How should you assess COO candidates?

Put the same work and evidence in front of each candidate before comparing answers.

  1. Comparable decision
Ask for an operating transition they led and what changed by the end.
  2. Authority
Test a decision outside the delegated authority.
  3. Team
Ask how they kept managers accountable during disruption.
  4. Handover
Ask for an example handover to a permanent successor.

Acas recommends a consistent, fair selection process: choosing who to interview.

Vetting

What happens before anyone reaches your shortlist?

Five stages before a candidate reaches a shortlist of three to five.

  1. Pedigree screen
    Tenure
We verify prior tenure in the seat, at the scale and stage you need. No consultant presenting as an executive.
  2. Mandate fit
    Fit
Fit to your stage, sector and the problem the seat exists to solve, not a CV keyword.
  3. Reference deep-dive
    Verify
We take references ourselves, from recent clients and boards: what they delivered, not what they titled it.
  4. Shortlist
    Shortlist
Three to five candidates, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.
  5. Kick-off
    Start
Scope, first-month outcomes and the contract agreed before day one.

The full process is on how we vet.
