Interim IT director salary · day rates, 2026
What an interim IT director earns, by the day and by the assignment
An interim IT director is paid a day rate, not a salary.
Robert Walters’ 2026 survey puts the PAYE contract rate for an IT director at £700–£1,000 a day in the Midlands, £750–£1,100 in the North and £800–£1,000 in the South.
Exec Capital’s 2026 benchmarks put an interim IT director at £500–£950 a day.
The interim IT director salary people search for is that rate times the days worked, with no salary, pension or paid holiday behind it.
When you hire an interim IT director through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Fractional recruitment works differently from a permanent search — shorter, scoped by days a week, and priced on the engagement. Send a Interim IT Director brief and we come back with a shortlist of three to five vetted candidates.
01/ the role
How an interim IT director is paid, and why the unit is the day
An interim IT director holds the IT seat full-time for a defined period: a departure, a cloud or ERP migration, the months after a security incident, or the run-up to a permanent hire.
The interim is paid for the days worked, either through a payroll or by invoice from their own company.
That makes the day rate the real unit of pay.
There is no salary, no employer pension and no paid holiday, and the interim carries the gaps between assignments.
Across all functions, the Institute of Interim Management’s 2026 survey puts the average assignment at 10.0 months, the average gap between assignments at 3.2 months and the average days billed in a year at 148.
Robert Walters labels its contract rates PAYE: paid through a payroll, not invoiced.
An interim who works through their own company instead pays themselves through salary and dividends from what the company earns, after its costs and Corporation Tax.
Either way, the day rate is not take-home pay.
02/ scope
How to hire an interim IT director
1. Define the mandate and its end
Say what the interim must deliver and by when: a stable service desk, a completed migration, a supplier renegotiated, a handover to a permanent hire.
A defined end makes the rate easier to agree.
The government’s Digital and Data capability framework sets out IT service management roles up to head of IT service management.
For a formal service management system, ISO/IEC 20000-1 sets the requirements.
2. Decide IR35 status at the start
If your business is medium or large, you make the status determination for the engagement and give the interim your reasons.
Settle it before you go to market, because it changes the rate candidates quote.
3. Match the record to the mandate
Ask for outcomes from comparable assignments: the migration that landed, the incident that was contained, the cost that came out.
For an incident, the NCSC’s incident management guidance is a fair test of what a candidate should already know.
A breach of personal data may need reporting to the ICO, which explains the process on its report a breach page.
Ask whether they have taken a business through Cyber Essentials, the NCSC’s minimum standard.
Roles on the board are listed on IT director jobs.
What we do on an interim brief
We recruit interim, fractional, part-time, temporary and permanent IT leaders, and non-executive directors.
We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.
If the cover needed is at chief information officer level, see how to hire an interim CIO.
03/ the route
Fractional, interim or permanent?
Four taps. The answer names the route for the seat and the page that covers it.
The route · Fractional
A fractional IT director. The work fills part of the week, so buy the days it needs.
A fractional IT director holds the seat on agreed days for as long as the seat is needed, and works for other clients on the rest.
The route · Interim
An interim IT director. The work fills the week, and it has an end: a programme, a cover, a transaction.
An interim IT director takes the seat full time for that stretch and hands it over when it is done.
The route · Interim, then permanent
Interim now, a permanent IT director after. The seat is full time and long term, and the need is now.
An interim IT director holds it while the permanent search runs, so the seat is not left empty.
The route · Permanent
A permanent IT director.A full-time seat that sits at the table for years is a permanent hire.
There is time to run a search, so run one.
04/ rates by stage
Interim IT director salary day rates by region and source
Day rates as each publisher states them, all 2026. Robert Walters publishes PAYE contract rates from roles advertised over twelve months, with its own average; it has no London row for the title. Exec Capital publishes a single interim band as at Q1 2026. Both are recruiters. The IIM figures cover every interim function, not IT alone.
05/ economics
Interim pay and IR35: who decides, and what it changes
Tax status turns on how the engagement runs, not on the title or the contract alone.
Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the interim’s own company decides.
The rules apply contract by contract, so one interim can have engagements on both sides.
It shows in the rates.
The IIM’s 2026 survey puts the average interim day rate at £949 outside IR35 and £830 inside, across all functions.
HMRC’s CEST tool gives its view on a specific engagement.
Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

07/ interim it director day rate
Interim IT director day rate by region
The interim IT director day rate depends on the region and the source.
Robert Walters puts the PAYE contract rate at £700–£1,000 a day in the Midlands, £750–£1,100 in the North and £800–£1,000 in the South.
Robert Walters’ averages are £850, £925 and £975.
Exec Capital gives a lower and wider band: £500–£950 a day, depending on seniority, sector and assignment complexity.
The two publishers measure different things.
Robert Walters reports advertised PAYE contract rates; Exec Capital gives its own reading of the market.
Robert Walters publishes no London IT director row, so neither source gives a London day rate for the title.
Ask each candidate for their rate and compare real numbers.
08/ the year
What the day rate comes to over a year
No interim is paid a salary, but the comparison helps.
At Robert Walters’ regional averages of £850–£975 a day, 220 days would bill £187,000–£214,500.
At the IIM’s all-function average of 148 days billed in a year, the same rates bill £125,800–£144,300.
Both are our arithmetic, a comparison and not a salary.
A full month of interim cover, at about 22 working days, comes to £18,700–£21,450 on Robert Walters’ averages (our arithmetic).
That is the client’s cost.
The interim pays their own pension, holidays, insurance and the gaps between assignments out of it.
For scale, Robert Walters’ average permanent salary for an IT director in a large enterprise is £125,500–£128,900 across the same three regions, before bonus, pension and employer’s National Insurance.

09/ the other routes
Interim, permanent or fractional: which pay basis fits
Interim cover buys a full-time IT director for a fixed period.
A permanent hire is paid a salary and package; see IT director salary.
If the work fits into part of the week, a fractional IT director on a day rate may cost less over the same months; see fractional IT director salary.
For executive-level cover, see interim CIO.
