Fractional IT director salary · day rate, days, month, year

What a fractional IT director earns, by the day, the week and the year

A fractional IT director is paid a day rate, not a salary.

Exec Capital’s 2026 benchmarks put a fractional IT director at £500–£850 a day, or a monthly retainer equivalent to one to three days a week.

At one day a week, that comes to about £2,165–£3,681 a month (the day rate × 4.33 weeks, our arithmetic).

What a fractional IT director salary comes to over a year depends on the days sold across clients, not the rate alone.

When you hire a fractional IT director through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Fractional IT director roles on the board

How fractional recruitment agencies compare is set out in one place, including how we work: a Fractional IT Director brief and a shortlist of three to five.

01/ the role

How a fractional IT director is paid, and what sets the rate

A fractional IT director runs a company’s IT for part of the week, on an ongoing basis: systems and infrastructure, the service desk or managed-service provider, suppliers, the IT budget and the security basics.

For a smaller business, the NCSC’s Cyber Essentials scheme sets out those basic controls.

Exec Capital describes the arrangement as typically one to three days a week.

The client pays a day rate, or a monthly retainer for an agreed number of days.

There is no salary, bonus or employer pension.

Exec Capital says the rate depends on the candidate’s background, the complexity of the IT environment, the sector and, where it applies, London weighting.

Fractional work is a growing share of interim work.

The Institute of Interim Management’s 2026 survey asked for the first time how many of interim managers’ last assignments were fractional: 25% were.

Across all assignments, the day rate remained the main pay basis, at 78%.

02/ scope

How to hire a fractional IT director

1. Count the days the work needs

List what the IT director must own: the supplier contracts, the security basics, the IT budget, a migration, the board report.

The government’s Cyber Governance Code of Practice sets out what a board should expect to hear on cyber risk.

Then estimate the days a month it takes.

The days set the monthly cost; the work sets the seniority.

2. Match seniority to the estate

A business with one office and a managed-service provider does not need a director who has run a regulated multi-site estate.

A business preparing for a sale, an audit or a certification such as ISO/IEC 27001 may.

Pay for the experience the next year needs; BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, runs the Chartered IT Professional standard, one marker of it.

3. Agree scope, access and rhythm

Write down which days, which meetings and which systems the IT director will have.

A retainer works when both sides know what it buys.

What we do on a fractional brief

We recruit fractional, interim, part-time, temporary and permanent IT leaders, and non-executive directors.

We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

03/ the week

How a week divides.

Part of a week is the point of the model: the days you buy are yours, the rest of the week goes to other clients. Move the days a week and the week redraws.

06/ rates by stage

Fractional IT director salary by days a week, a month and a year

The day rate is Exec Capital’s 2026 band for a fractional IT director (as at Q1 2026; Exec Capital is a recruiter). The monthly column is the day rate × days a week × 4.33 weeks, and the annual column the day rate × days a week × 52 weeks: our arithmetic, before any weeks off, a comparison and not a salary.

07/ economics

Rate is not income: what a fractional IT director keeps

The day rate is what the client pays, not what the IT director takes home.

Most fractional directors invoice through their own limited company and take money out as a salary through PAYE and as dividends from profit, after Corporation Tax.

Out of the same income they fund their pension, holidays, insurance and the days they do not sell.

Once fees pass the threshold, the company must also register for VAT and charge it on the day rate.

Tax status changes the number too.

Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small client outside the public sector, the director’s own company decides.

The rules apply contract by contract, so a fractional IT director with three clients can have three different answers.

HMRC’s CEST tool gives its view on one engagement; our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

09/ fractional it director day rate

Fractional IT director day rate and what moves it

The fractional IT director day rate Exec Capital publishes for 2026 is £500–£850.

It is one recruiter’s reading of the market as at Q1 2026, not a survey, and no other source we can cite publishes a band for this seat.

Where a candidate sits in the band depends on what Exec Capital lists: their background, the complexity of the IT environment, the sector and London weighting.

Ask every candidate for their own rate and compare real numbers; we set it out on the shortlist.

For the seat above, see fractional CIO salary.

10/ the year

How much fractional IT directors make in a year

Multiply the rate by the days sold.

At £500–£850 a day, each day a week sold for 52 weeks bills £26,000–£44,200 (our arithmetic, before any weeks off).

Three clients at one day a week each bill three times that; a full week across several clients is five times it, if the diary fills.

In practice the diary rarely fills every week.

Holidays, the gaps between clients and the time spent finding the next one all come off the total.

A fractional IT director salary is the profit of a small business, not a rate multiplied by a full year.

To model your own position, start from the days you can realistically sell and use the rate calculator.

11/ the comparison

Full-time salary vs fractional pay: comparing like with like

A permanent IT director is paid a salary and package, with employer’s National Insurance and pension on top; see IT director salary for those benchmarks.

An interim is paid by the day for full-time cover over a fixed period; see interim IT director salary.

A fractional IT director is paid only for the days bought.

Compare the total cost for the days the business needs, not the headline figures.

12/ questions

Fractional IT director salary FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in a fractional IT director.

Exec Capital’s 2026 benchmarks put a fractional IT director at £500–£850 a day, as at Q1 2026, depending on background, the complexity of the IT environment, the sector and London weighting.
A fractional IT director has no salary from the client: they are paid a day rate or a monthly retainer. At £500–£850 a day, one day a week comes to about £2,165–£3,681 a month, or £26,000–£44,200 over 52 weeks (our arithmetic). Annual income depends on how many days they sell across clients.
Exec Capital describes the arrangement as typically one to three days a week. At its £500–£850 day rate, two days a week comes to about £4,330–£7,361 a month and three days to about £6,495–£11,042 (day rate × days × 4.33, our arithmetic).
There is no single figure. At £500–£850 a day, each day a week sold for 52 weeks bills £26,000–£44,200 (our arithmetic). From that come the costs of running their own company, their pension, unbilled days and tax, which depends on IR35 status engagement by engagement.
Count the days the work needs, match the seniority to the estate, and agree scope, access and rhythm before the rate. See hire a fractional IT director.
The day rate times the days. At Exec Capital’s £500–£850 a day, one day a week is about £2,165–£3,681 a month (× 4.33 weeks, our arithmetic). There is no employer’s National Insurance or pension on top when the director works outside IR35 through their own company. We set out the day rate for every candidate on the shortlist.
It decides how the fees are taxed. A medium or large client makes the status determination for each engagement; for a small private-sector client, the director’s own company decides (HMRC). Status depends on how each engagement runs in practice, so it is set per contract, not per person.
