Fractional Financial Controller — the balanced verdict

Why this role stands out
  • Explicit fractional engagement (4 days/month) with clear upside possibility during initial setup.
  • Multi-entity and offshore complexity (UK/North Macedonia intercompany, transfer pricing) signals mature finance challenge.
  • Hands-on controller remitclose calendar, consolidation, revenue recognition (SaaS/subscription), cashflow forecasting, AP/credit control.
  • Direct employer contact (MD email provided); pragmatic about delivery model (contract/self-employed/practice with named individual).
Worth checking before you apply
  • Initial months may exceed stated 4 days/month during function build-out; scope creep risk if processes not documented early.
  • Offshore entity adds complexity; transfer pricing scrutiny and intercompany recharge logic must be solid from day one.
  • No day rate or retainer range given; candidates must negotiate openly on first conversation.

Financial Controller (Fractional) GDPRLocal | Remote, UK based | Contract, around 4 days per month We are looking for a hands-on Financial Controller to drive the finance function at GDPRLocal, on a fractional basis of around four days a month.

About us GDPRLocal is a UK headquartered data protection services business. We act as the appointed GDPR Representative, DPO and compliance partner for companies selling into the UK and Europe, on a subscription model. We are around 30 people, approaching £2m turnover, registered/headquartered in UK with operations in North Macedonia.

The role This is a doing role, with hands on ownership across: Management reporting. The monthly close calendar, entity and consolidated group reporting, variance against budget with commentary that explains what actually moved, plus the annual budget and reforecasts. Cashflow. A rolling group cash position and forecast that supports hiring and investment decisions, with risk and headroom flagged early and with options attached. Revenue and deferred income. Recognition across rolling annual and monthly subscriptions, and reconciliation of the billing platform to the ledger, including credits, refunds, mid-term changes and failed payments. Intercompany and group finance. Recharges between our UK and North Macedonian entities, funding movements, and a position that stands up to audit and transfer pricing scrutiny. Statutory and adviser liaison. Owning the timetable with our external accountants and driving year end through to filing. Accounts payable and credit control. Owning the process, the approvals and the aged debt position, with day-to-day processing delivered by our bookkeeping partner. Controls and process. Building and documenting a finance operating model.

What we are looking for Essential: Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA or CIMA), or equivalent by experience with a strong controller-level track record. Genuinely hands-on. Comfortable building the schedule as well as reviewing it. Experience of small and mid-sized businesses, ideally owner-managed, where finance is one function among many and pragmatism matters. Multi-entity experience, including intercompany balances and recharges. Confident owning relationships with external accountants and holding them to a deadline. Strong Excel, and comfortable working with data out of operational systems rather than only the ledger. Helpful: Recurring revenue, subscription or software business experience, particularly deferred income and revenue recognition. Experience of a business with an offshore operating centre. Experience of building a finance function from a standing start rather than inheriting a running one.

Practical details Around four days a month in steady state, potentially uplifted in the initial months while the reporting and processes are developed. Contract or self-employed. We will consider a practice providing a named individual, but we want continuity rather than a rotating resource. Remote, UK based preferred, with occasional travel to Brighton. Day rate or fixed monthly retainer against an agreed scope. We are open to either.
