Fractional chief growth officer salary · pro-rata, 2026

What a fractional chief growth officer earns · pro-rata of the permanent salary

No independent UK source publishes a fractional chief growth officer day rate.

The figures here are the permanent chief growth officer salary from Ultimate Asset’s 2026 survey spread across working days — our arithmetic, a pro-rata floor for comparison, not a market rate.

Ultimate Asset puts the permanent salary at £130,000–£220,000, with a median of £160,000.

Divided by 220 working days, the median comes to about £730 a day (our arithmetic).

A fractional chief growth officer salary is whatever the days sold add up to.

When you hire a fractional chief growth officer through us, we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.

Growth roles on the board

How fractional recruitment agencies compare is set out in one place, including how we work: a Fractional Chief Growth Officer brief and a shortlist of three to five.

01/ the role

How a fractional chief growth officer is paid, and why we show a pro-rata figure

A fractional chief growth officer owns the growth number for part of the week, usually one to three days.

The client pays a day rate or a monthly retainer for an agreed number of days.

There is no salary from the client.

We looked for an independent UK source that publishes a day rate for the seat.

We found none: what exists online is providers’ own price lists, US-dollar marketplaces and pages that quote each other.

None of those is a market rate for a fractional chief growth officer in the UK, so we do not quote them.

What does exist is a verified permanent salary for the seat.

Ultimate Asset’s 2026 survey of UK emerging-media businesses puts a chief growth officer at £130,000–£220,000, with a median of £160,000.

Spreading that salary across 220 working days gives a day equivalent: our arithmetic, a floor for comparison, not a rate anyone has published.

A growth leader can also be employed part-time on a salary.

A part-time employee must not be treated less favourably than a comparable full-time one, and some benefits are applied pro rata (GOV.UK).

That is a different route from a fractional engagement on a day rate.

02/ scope

What to check when you hire a fractional chief growth officer

1. Compare the quotes you receive

The real figure is the quote.

Ask each candidate for the day rate, the days a week, the minimum term and the notice on each side.

Then set the quote beside the pro-rata figures below, so you know what the same days would cost as a share of a permanent salary.

2. Settle IR35 status

Status is decided by how the engagement runs, not by the title or the contract alone.

Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), a medium or large client makes the status determination.

HMRC sets out which clients count as medium or large, and its CEST tool gives its view on one engagement.

3. Check VAT and what the rate leaves out

If the person’s company is registered for VAT, VAT is added to each invoice.

A day rate also carries no holiday pay, benefits or employer pension.

Those come with employment: an employer pays into a workplace pension for an enrolled employee.

4. Test range, not one discipline

Most growth leaders come up through marketing, sales or product.

Ask for evidence from all three.

Membership of the Chartered Institute of Marketing or the Institute of Sales Professionals is one signal among several.

What we do on a fractional brief

We recruit fractional, interim, part-time, temporary and permanent growth leaders, and non-executive directors.

We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, and every candidate goes through our five-stage vetting first.

To start, hire a fractional CGO.

03/ the week

How a week divides.

Part of a week is the point of the model: the days you buy are yours, the rest of the week goes to other clients. Move the days a week and the week redraws.

Fractional chief growth officer salary pro-rata, our arithmetic

Our arithmetic, not a market rate. Each row starts from Ultimate Asset’s 2026 permanent chief growth officer salary (UK emerging media, 2025–2026). The day equivalent is the salary ÷ 220 working days, rounded to the nearest £10. The weekly columns multiply that day equivalent by the days a week and by 46 weeks. 220 days and 46 weeks are our assumptions.

Permanent salary (Ultimate Asset, 2026)Day equivalent (÷ 220)1 day a week × 462 days a week × 463 days a week × 46

Highest, £220,000£1,000£46,000£92,000£138,000

07/ economics

A day rate is not a salary: what sits outside it

Most fractional executives invoice through their own limited company.

They take money out as a salary through PAYE and as dividends from profit.

Their pension, holidays, insurance and the days they do not sell all come out of the same income.

Employment status for tax and for employment law can differ.

HMRC may treat someone as self-employed for tax purposes even if they have a different status in employment law.

Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.

09/ the method

How we work the pro-rata figures, step by step

Start from the permanent salary: £130,000, £160,000 and £220,000 are Ultimate Asset’s lowest, median and highest figures for a chief growth officer.

Divide each by 220 working days and round to the nearest £10.

That gives £590, £730 and £1,000 a day (our arithmetic).

Then multiply by the days.

One day a week for 46 weeks is 46 days; two days is 92; three days is 138.

At the £730 median day equivalent, that comes to £33,580, £67,160 and £100,740 a year (our arithmetic).

These are a floor for comparison.

They are not what a fractional chief growth officer charges, and no source we can cite says what that is.

The quotes you receive are the market.

10/ the other routes

Permanent, interim or fractional: the three ways to pay for the seat

A permanent hire is paid a salary and package; see chief growth officer salary for the benchmarks in full.

An interim is paid by the day for full-time cover over a fixed period; see interim chief growth officer salary.

A fractional chief growth officer is paid only for the days bought.

If the problem sits inside one team, the seat may be a head of growth rather than a chief.

See head of growth salary for that seat’s pay, and fractional chief growth officer jobs for roles on the board.

11/ questions

Fractional chief growth officer salary FAQ

The questions people ask before bringing in a fractional chief growth officer.

A fractional chief growth officer has no salary from the client: they are paid a day rate or retainer. No independent UK source publishes that rate. As a comparison, Ultimate Asset’s £160,000 permanent median ÷ 220 working days is about £730 a day (our arithmetic, a pro-rata floor, not a market rate).
From the permanent salary. Ultimate Asset’s 2026 survey gives £130,000–£220,000, median £160,000. We divide by 220 working days, round to the nearest £10, then multiply by 1, 2 or 3 days a week for 46 weeks. All of it is our arithmetic.
At the £730 median day equivalent, one day a week for 46 weeks is £33,580 (our arithmetic). At the lowest and highest permanent figures it is £27,140 and £46,000. The quote a candidate gives you is the real figure.
The day rate times the days. No source we can cite publishes the rate, so compare each quote with the pro-rata figures: £590–£1,000 a day from the permanent band, £730 at the median (our arithmetic). We send a shortlist of 3–5, each with day rate, availability and IR35 position set out.
Name the growth number the seat owns, count the days the work needs, and ask each candidate for day rate, days and notice. Settle IR35 status before you go to market. See hire a fractional CGO for the steps.
No. A day rate carries no holiday pay, benefits or employer pension; the person funds those from their own income. An employer pays into a workplace pension only for an employee.
It decides how the fees are taxed. Status turns on how the engagement runs. A medium or large client makes the status determination; for a small private-sector client, the person’s own company decides (HMRC).
If the person’s company is registered for VAT, yes: VAT is added to each invoice. Ask whether a quote includes it.
