Odgers (now branded simply as 'Odgers', formerly Odgers Berndtson) is the UK's largest home-grown executive search firm, headquartered in London. It is the firm UK boards reach for most often when they want a UK plc / FTSE 250 / public-sector search led from London rather than from a US-headquartered Big Five firm.

Where Odgers is the obvious choice

Odgers is the obvious first call for UK plc and FTSE 250 board and C-suite searches that want to be led from London. The firm is London-headquartered, run from London, with the partner relationships sitting in London — there is no transatlantic time-zone or partner-routing overhead.

It is also the leading UK firm in public-sector and public-impact executive search — university vice-chancellors, NHS trust chairs, charity chief executives, central and local government senior leadership. The 'Public Impact' practice and the related Saxton Bampfylde-style work is a genuine strength.

Among the firms on this page, Odgers is the only one with a publicly-named 'Interim Management' service line on equal footing with retained Executive Search — analogous to Heidrick's On-Demand Talent but rooted in the UK interim market.

When Odgers probably is not the right answer

For truly global, multi-jurisdiction senior searches — a US-headquartered multinational placing a global CEO, a German parent placing a US president — a Big Five firm with deeper presence in the relevant geographies will typically have stronger market mapping. Odgers' international footprint is real but is meaningfully shallower than Spencer Stuart's or Korn Ferry's outside the UK.

And the same defined-phase caveat applies: a retained Odgers search is the wrong tool when the brief is bridging, interim, or fractional. Odgers' Interim Management practice fits some of these but is a high-end interim brand; for lower-cost defined-phase work a fractional platform will typically be both faster and lower in total cost.

When a fractional or interim executive fits instead of an Odgers retained search

Odgers is the right answer when you have decided you need a permanent UK plc / FTSE 250 / public-sector leader and you want the search led from London. It is the wrong answer when you have not yet committed to a permanent appointment, or when the role is defined-phase by design.

For UK growth-stage and PE-backed companies in particular, a fractional CFO or CMO will often deliver more value per month than a retained Odgers search for a permanent equivalent — start in week 2, no 25–33% search fee, no annualised permanent package. The right discipline is to ask whether the role you have in mind is genuinely a permanent multi-year appointment, or whether you are using the language of permanence to avoid the harder question.
