INTERIM RECRUITMENT AGENCY REVIEW

Boyden Interim review — interim integrated with retained search at a Big Five-adjacent global firm

Boyden's Interim Management practice sits inside the wider Boyden federation — the partner-led global search firm founded 1946. Boyden is one of the few global firms outside the Big Five to maintain Interim Management as a named capability alongside Executive Search and Leadership Consulting. The IIM ranked Boyden 7 in its 2026 Platinum tier of UK interim service providers.

Where Boyden Interim is the obvious choice

Boyden Interim is the natural fit when you want one partner relationship across interim, retained executive search, and leadership consulting. Boyden positions interim as one of three integrated capabilities — 'Boyden's interim management solutions integrate seamlessly with our executive search and leadership consulting capabilities,' per the firm's own Interim Management page. For a client who may need interim cover today and a permanent search next quarter, that integration is a real benefit.

The IIM's 2026 ranking placed Boyden at rank 7 in the Platinum tier of UK interim service providers — the highest of the three agencies profiled on this site. That ranking is based on roughly 25,000 individual practitioner survey responses, so it reflects interim managers' own assessment of which firms they want to work with.

Boyden's strength in industrial, healthcare, and family-owned mid-market carries over from the parent firm's retained search practice — these are sectors where Boyden's federation model and partner-level relationships work particularly well.

When Boyden Interim probably is not the right answer

If your brief is interim-only with no parallel search or consulting interest, the integrated-service positioning is not a meaningful advantage. A pure-play interim agency like Russam or BIE Executive will be more single-mindedly focused on the interim engagement.

Boyden does not publish interim-specific scale figures — placement count, interim pool size, NPS — separately from the wider firm. Russam (38,000 registered, 4,500 vetted) and BIE (3,000+ network, NPS 96) both publish more transparent interim-specific metrics. If you weight published-scale transparency, this is a real difference.

For charity, public sector or not-for-profit interim, Russam's specialist practice in those sectors is the stronger fit. Boyden's federation model is built around commercial industries; the published practice areas don't include a named public-sector / charity grouping at the same depth.

When a fractional executive fits instead of a Boyden Interim engagement

Boyden Interim's engagement model is full-time, daily rate, defined-period (typically 3–12 months), with the same fee economics as the parent firm's broader retained business. It is the right tool when you need a senior executive in the seat full-time for a defined transformation, vacancy cover, or crisis response.

It is the wrong shape for part-time ongoing capability — a CFO 2 days a week through a growth phase, a CMO 1 day a week running marketing direction over the long term. For those briefs a fractional engagement is normally lower in total monthly cost and a better fit for the work shape.

Boyden's integrated-services positioning also means it is rarely the cheapest interim option — clients pay for the integration with retained search and leadership consulting. If your engagement is interim-only and cost-sensitive, a pure-play interim provider or a fractional alternative is worth considering.
