02/ the week
How a week divides.
Part of a week is the point of the model: each client buys days, the rest of the week goes to other clients. Move the days a week and the week redraws.
Illustration only: one way a fractional executive’s week can divide at 2 days a week for you. Each block is half a day.
03/ overview
Compliance function part-time opportunities
The shape of fractional work in this market.
MLRO and Chief Compliance Officer are the core part-time compliance roles in regulated sectors.
Companies from fintech startups through established financial services hire part-time compliance support — senior compliance leaders for regulatory oversight, risk management, and compliance framework implementation.
Key compliance functions in demand: MLRO, Chief Compliance Officer, Compliance Manager, Risk & Compliance Analyst, and specialist advisory roles including regulatory applications, audit preparation, and compliance transformation.
Why compliance works well part-time
Compliance leadership often requires strategic oversight and periodic intensive work rather than daily operational involvement.
Many compliance tasks are cyclical (regulatory reporting, reviews, training) making part-time arrangements effective.
Companies get senior expertise for critical regulatory decisions without a full-time hire — FD Capital puts a permanent MLRO at £70,000–£350,000+ depending on firm type (see MLRO salary).
How to hire a part-time compliance officer
To hire a part-time compliance officer, define the regulatory gap first — AML oversight, a regulatory application, audit preparation or a compliance framework build — then match the role level to it: MLRO, Chief Compliance Officer, Compliance Manager or Risk & Compliance Analyst.
04/ rates

Published bands only. Exec Capital publishes a fractional compliance officer rate at head-of-compliance level (SMF16-approved) of £600–£1,200 a day, typically two to three days a week. We hold no published UK day rate for a part-time Compliance Manager or Risk & Compliance Analyst, so none is shown. Rates vary by company stage, regulatory complexity and seniority level.

08/ the regulated roles
Part-time compliance officer — the regulated roles and what they cover
In an FCA-regulated firm, a part-time compliance officer usually holds one of two regulated roles.
Compliance Oversight (SMF16) is the person responsible for the compliance function and for reporting to the governing body on it; the MLRO (SMF17) oversees compliance with the FCA's rules on systems and controls against money laundering.
Both are Senior Management Functions, which need FCA or PRA approval before the person starts, and the FCA notes that both are often held by people who are not on the governing body.
One person can hold both, with approval for each — see fractional MLRO for the AML seat.
The FCA's Financial Services Register shows which individuals it has approved, so a candidate's past roles can be checked before the interview.
The AML side of the brief rests on the Money Laundering Regulations 2017, which require firms to assess their risks and keep policies, controls and procedures to match.
Whatever the title, the brief reaches beyond the rulebook.
Retail-facing firms answer to the FCA's Consumer Duty, which requires firms to put their customers' needs first.
Financial sanctions are another strand: OFSI's general guidance covers the scope of UK financial sanctions, the restrictions, ownership and control, and reporting obligations.
Personal data brings the ICO into scope as well, starting with whether the business owes the data protection fee.
Complaints are a further strand: when a customer is not satisfied with a firm's final response, they can take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service, so the compliance lead needs to know how the firm's complaints process runs.
Scope the days against that list, not against a job title.
If the board wants a senior compliance voice at the table, hire a part-time Chief Compliance Officer; if the gap is data protection specifically, a fractional DPO is the specialist seat.
