Fractional lawyer jobs · hire a fractional lawyer, or hire in-house counsel for good
Fractional lawyer jobs are in-house legal roles held for part of the week: a legal counsel, a senior counsel or a sector specialist who works inside one business for agreed days, often alongside other clients. To hire a fractional lawyer, decide what the lawyer will own and how many days a week that takes.
We recruit fractional, interim, part-time, temporary and permanent lawyers and legal leaders. On every brief we send a shortlist of 3–5, each with pay or day rate, availability and IR35 position set out, after five-stage vetting. Looking for work? Live senior legal roles are on the board below.

01/ the role
Fractional lawyer jobs: what the work covers
A fractional lawyer does in-house legal work for part of the week. The usual scope: commercial contracts and the templates behind them; supplier and customer negotiations; employment and data protection questions; regulatory correspondence; and managing outside law firms when a matter needs one. The difference from a law firm is where the lawyer sits. A fractional lawyer works inside the business, knows how it operates and is there on the agreed days, not on a matter-by-matter basis.
Where the role sits in a legal team
Most fractional lawyer jobs sit below or beside the general counsel. In a company without a GC, the lawyer may be the only in-house lawyer and report to the CEO or the finance director. Where the seat needs to own legal risk at board level, it is a general counsel role: hire a fractional general counsel. For full-time cover over a fixed term, hire an interim general counsel. For a permanent appointment, see general counsel recruitment. What the top seat covers is set out in what a general counsel does.
What fractional lawyer jobs pay
No source we trust publishes a fractional lawyer day rate, so we do not quote one; every candidate on a shortlist states their own. For the top of the in-house ladder, Robert Half’s 2026 salary guide puts a full-time general counsel at £127,000 (25th percentile) to £173,250 (75th), median £145,500. A fractional fee is the day rate times the days worked. See fractional GC salary for how GC pay compares.
02/ scope
How to hire a fractional lawyer
1. List the legal work
Start with the work, not the title. Contracts waiting for review, a data protection backlog, a regulator asking questions, disputes that keep reaching outside counsel. Then decide the days a week, who the lawyer reports to and what they may sign off alone.
2. Check how they are regulated
A solicitor you employ who is held out as a solicitor, or who carries out reserved legal activities in-house for you, must hold an annual practising certificate, the SRA says. Ask to see it. If the lawyer works through their own company or a firm rather than as your employee, ask how they are regulated and insured for the work they do for you.
3. Test the experience
Ask for work from a business like yours: a contract template they rewrote, a negotiation they ran, a regulatory response they drafted. Take references from the managers and boards they advised, not only from former firms.
4. Settle the engagement
Agree the days, the matters for the first three months, how urgent requests are handled between days, and who holds privileged documents. If the lawyer will work through their own company, check IR35 before the start date (below).

05/ fractional legal counsel
Fractional legal counsel: the working lawyer in-house
Fractional legal counsel is the job title most fractional lawyer roles carry. Legal counsel and senior legal counsel are the working lawyers of an in-house team: they draft, negotiate and advise, and they escalate to a general counsel or head of legal where one exists. A fractional legal counsel does that work for part of the week, for one business or a few.
The role suits a business with steady legal volume that does not fill five days. It also suits a legal team that has a GC but needs another pair of hands for a busy year, a product launch or a regulatory project. Where the business needs someone to own legal risk at board level, the seat is a general counsel role instead.
In-house counsel who are solicitors keep their professional duties when they join you. The SRA’s guidance for employers says in-house solicitors must act with independence and integrity, and that duties which protect the wider public interest take precedence over any client’s interests, including an employer’s. So a fractional legal counsel may advise against a course of action, or decline an instruction. The Law Society’s In-house Network supports in-house lawyers on the same questions.
06/ sra regulation
SRA regulation and the in-house lawyer
The Solicitors Regulation Authority regulates solicitors in England and Wales, including those who work in-house. The SRA’s practising certificate guidance sets out when a solicitor needs one: for example, when they are held out as a solicitor, or when they carry on reserved legal activities.
Reserved legal activities are defined in section 12 of the Legal Services Act 2007: the exercise of a right of audience, the conduct of litigation, reserved instrument activities, probate activities, notarial activities and the administration of oaths. Only authorised people may carry them on. Most in-house commercial work, such as drafting and advising, is not reserved.
There are limits on who a solicitor employed by an ordinary business may act for. The SRA’s guidance for employers of solicitors says such a solicitor can advise the business itself and provide most legal services to others, but not reserved legal services to the public unless the business is authorised. The same guidance notes that an employed solicitor is not covered by the SRA’s compulsory indemnity insurance, so the employer should make sure its own insurance covers their work.
07/ fractional lawyer by sector
Fractional lawyer by sector: media, tech and regulated businesses
Some sectors generate legal work that suits a specialist for part of the week. The fractional lawyer by sector is someone who already knows the rules that business lives under, so the days go on the work rather than on learning the field.
Media. Publishers, broadcasters and content businesses need pre-publication advice, rights and licensing, and talent contracts. Defamation is the recurring risk: under section 1 of the Defamation Act 2013, a statement is not defamatory unless its publication has caused or is likely to cause serious harm to the claimant’s reputation. A media lawyer is judged on how quickly and clearly they can apply tests like that before something goes out.
Technology. Software and data businesses need customer and supplier terms, intellectual property, and data protection. Under UK GDPR some organisations must appoint a data protection officer, for example where their core activities involve large-scale, regular and systematic monitoring of individuals, the ICO explains. A tech lawyer often works alongside that role; see fractional DPO jobs.
Regulated sectors. In financial services, the Senior Managers and Certification Regime aims to make individuals more accountable for their conduct and competence. A lawyer in a regulated firm works on regulatory change, policies and correspondence with the regulator, usually next to a compliance or anti-money-laundering lead; see fractional MLRO.
08/ ir35
IR35 and fractional lawyer jobs employed part-time or through a company
A fractional lawyer is either employed on a part-time contract or works through their own company or a firm. Where they work through their own company, the off-payroll working rules (IR35) may apply. In most cases the client decides the worker’s status; for a small client outside the public sector, the worker’s own company decides.
Status turns on how the engagement runs in practice, not on its label. Set out control, substitution and the days in the contract, then run it that way. Our IR35 guide sets out the tests.
